The sacred is so constantly present in India that it&#8217;s a surprise to learn that according to its constitution it is a secular democratic republic.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>When the Indian constitution was drawn up after independence (1947) and the ensuing deadly conflicts between Hindus and Muslims, several clauses were included that established India as a secular state. Article 15 forbids discrimination on the basis of race, religion, caste, gender or place of birth. Recent decades have seen some decline in religious observance, especially among young urbanites.<\/p>\n<p><strong>This religious fervour is surely connected with the fact that India is the birthplace of four religions; <\/strong>Hinduism, Buddhism, Jainism and Sikhism. Islam comes next (about 14%) and Christianity third (about 3%). Sikhs (mainly concentrated in the <a href=\"https:\/\/magikindia.com\/north-india\/punjab\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Punjab<\/a>) represent about 2% of the population, Buddhists 1% and Jains 0.4%. Some six million Indians, especially in the tribal areas, follow other religions.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Hinduism<\/h3>\n<hr \/>\n<p><strong>Hinduism is often considered one of the world&#8217;s oldest religions. <\/strong>Worldwide, it ranks third in terms of membership, after Christianity and Islam. It originated in India and the subcontinent is still home to the majority of its followers.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_49745\" style=\"width: 962px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/magikindia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/vedas.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-49745\" class=\"wp-image-49745 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/magikindia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/vedas.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"952\" height=\"630\" srcset=\"https:\/\/magikindia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/vedas.jpg 952w, https:\/\/magikindia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/vedas-300x199.jpg 300w, https:\/\/magikindia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/vedas-720x476.jpg 720w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 952px) 100vw, 952px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-49745\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">vedas<\/p><\/div>\n<p><strong>Hinduism&#8217;s origins lie in the Sanatana Dharma or &#8216;eternal law&#8217;.<\/strong> The term &#8216;Hinduism&#8217; comes from the Persian word <em>hindu<\/em>, the term used by invading Muslims to refer to the population of the Indus Valley.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Hinduism has no prophets and no central dogma. It is based on the Vedas<\/strong>, scriptures which, according to tradition, were revealed to mankind through the visions of the <em>rishis<\/em> (saints) during deep meditation. This <em>sruti<\/em> or revealed knowledge is thought to have been set down in writing between 1700 and 1100 BCE.<\/p>\n<p>There are four Vedas: the R<em>igveda<\/em> or &#8216;Veda of verses&#8217;, the <em>Yajurveda<\/em> or &#8216;Veda of formulas&#8217;, the <em>Samaveda<\/em> or &#8216;Veda of melodies&#8217; and the <em>Atharvaveda<\/em>, containing magic spells.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_49747\" style=\"width: 650px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/magikindia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/trimurti.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-49747\" class=\"wp-image-49747 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/magikindia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/trimurti.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"456\" srcset=\"https:\/\/magikindia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/trimurti.jpg 640w, https:\/\/magikindia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/trimurti-300x214.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-49747\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The Trimurti: Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva<\/p><\/div>\n<p><strong>The Vedas recognise the existence of a transcendental consciousness called Brahman (not to be confused with the god Brahma), the Universal Soul (Paramatman) or the One.<\/strong> Brahman appears in the form of personified gods, the main ones being the gods of the <em>Trimurti<\/em> (&#8216;three forms&#8217;): Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva, who correspond respectively to the creative activity, preserving activity and destructive activity of Brahman. Each is partnered by a goddess-consort symbolising <a href=\"https:\/\/magikindia.com\/pelerinages\/shakti-peetha\/\"><em>shakti<\/em><\/a>, creative energy. The goddess Lakshmi is the complement of Vishnu, Parvati of Shiva and Saraswati of Brahma.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Buddhism<\/h3>\n<hr \/>\n<p><strong>Buddhism arose in India in the 5th century BCE after the enlightenment and teaching of Siddhartha Gautama, the Buddha<\/strong>. In Hinduism, the Buddha is regarded as an avatar of Vishnu.<\/p>\n<p>Buddhism is an individual path whose aim is enlightenment, achieved by extinguishing the egoic desire and illusion that are the cause of human suffering. Actions can be favourable and positive (<em>kusala<\/em>) or unwholesome and negative (<em>akusala<\/em>).<\/p>\n<p><strong>The expansion of Buddhism in India owed much to the Maurya emperor Ashoka <\/strong>(268-239 BCE), who ruled over North India and converted to Buddhism. Later, the <a href=\"https:\/\/magikindia.com\/culture-india\/history-of-india\/\">Gupta <\/a>dynasty (320-450 CE) favoured the further spread of Buddhism.<\/p>\n<p><strong>In the 13th century Buddhism declined<\/strong> as Hinduism revived with the support of a number of rulers.<\/p>\n<p>Today Buddhism is mainly followed in the Himalayan parts of India such as <a href=\"https:\/\/magikindia.com\/leh-jammu-kashmir\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ladakh<\/a> and Sikkim.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Jainism<\/h3>\n<hr \/>\n<div id=\"attachment_15895\" style=\"width: 719px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/magikindia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/DSC04242.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-15895\" class=\"wp-image-15895 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/magikindia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/DSC04242.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"709\" height=\"473\" srcset=\"https:\/\/magikindia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/DSC04242.jpg 709w, https:\/\/magikindia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/DSC04242-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/magikindia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/DSC04242-600x400.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 709px) 100vw, 709px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-15895\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Jain temple in Jaisalmer<\/p><\/div>\n<p><strong>Jainism (from the Sanskrit <em>jina<\/em>, &#8216;victor&#8217;), is a religion that probably began to emerge very early, around the 10th century BCE<\/strong>. Little is known about its origins, but it probably has its roots in animism and shamanism.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The purpose of life in Jainism is the same as in Hinduism, Buddhism and Sikhism: to attain enlightenment, called <em>moksha <\/em>or <em>nirvana<\/em>.<\/strong> The aim is to end the perpetual round of reincarnations by making certain lifestyle choices, called &#8216;vows&#8217;. The foremost vow is nonviolence, <em>ahimsa<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The <em>Tirthankaras <\/em>(Sanskrit for &#8216;bridge-builders&#8217;) <\/strong>are enlightened masters of the past who taught the principles of Jainism. There are said to be 720 in all but only the 24 most recent are venerated. He discovered the teaching of the poet saint Kabir, a man revered by both Hindus and Muslims. After a spiritual experience of &#8216;fusion&#8217; with the essence of all things, Guru Nanak composed the <em>Jap Ji Sahib<\/em>, a mystical poem that sums up the teaching he decided to share.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The word <em>Sikh<\/em> comes from the Sanskrit <em>sisya<\/em>, which means &#8216;student&#8217; or &#8216;disciple&#8217;.<\/strong> Sikh monotheism is expressed in the symbol \u0a74 (<em>Ek Ong Kar<\/em>), which can be translated as &#8220;one manifested creative consciousness&#8221;. Sikhs believe in a single supreme god, immanent and transcendent. He is called the Supreme Guru.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Sikhism is based on the concept of equal rights for all. It considers that all religions can lead to God.<\/strong> None is superior to any other.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Sikhs therefore do not acknowledge India&#8217;s caste system <\/strong>and do not believe in worshipping idols or performing rituals. Their religion is a way of being, with the idea of serving humanity and generating tolerance and brotherhood towards all. Trade developed early between Arabs and Indians, with the ports on India&#8217;s West coast playing a leading role. In this way the State of <a href=\"https:\/\/magikindia.com\/inde-du-sud\/kerala\/\">Kerala<\/a> was the first to admit the Muslim religion; the first mosque was built in 642 CE, in Kasagorod.<\/p>\n<p>(<a href=\"https:\/\/magikindia.com\/culture-india\/history-of-india\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">See the History of India<\/a>.)<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Christianity in India<\/h3>\n<hr \/>\n<p><strong>Statistically, Christianity is India&#8217;s third religion<\/strong>, with 2.3% of the country&#8217;s total population. The earliest Christian communities are thought to have been founded in the early years of Christianity, nearly 2000 years ago, giving rise to the Malabar Church in modern-day Kerala.<\/p>\n<div identified as such) is in Cathedral of St. Thomas in Mylapore, Chennai.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The Roman Catholic Church reached India with the Portuguese explorer Vasco da Gama.<\/strong> One of the oldest churches still standing, built in the Portuguese style, is in Cochin <a href=\"https:\/\/magikindia.com\/kochi-cochin-kerala\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">(Kochi)<\/a>, <a
