{"id":101064,"date":"2022-07-17T07:13:00","date_gmt":"2022-07-17T05:13:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/magikindia.com\/?p=101064"},"modified":"2022-07-17T09:18:47","modified_gmt":"2022-07-17T07:18:47","slug":"les-fascinants-peuples-de-kutch-gujarat","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/magikindia.com\/en\/les-fascinants-peuples-de-kutch-gujarat\/","title":{"rendered":"The Fascinating People of Kutch, Gujarat"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>Kutch (Kachchh), is an amazing district located in the northwest of the state of <a href=\"https:\/\/magikindia.com\/must-see-places-gujarat\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Gujarat.<\/a> The proximity to Sindh and the region&#8217;s ideal location on a navigable stretch of the Arabian Sea have made the district of Kutch the hub of cultural exchange which is reflected in its motley population. There are about fifty different ethnic groups in Kutch, without counting the many subdivisions, which is to say that it is impossible to mention them all in this article, so my choice fell on the most emblematic people of the region, namely Meghwals, Jats, Ahirs and Rabaris.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-css-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"les-meghwals\"><strong>Meghwals<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-css-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p>The Meghwal community (also known as Megh and Meghraj) has little written history that can trace its origin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What we do know is that the Meghwals claim descent from the <strong>Rishi Megh,<\/strong> a saint who had the power to make rain fall through his prayers. The word \u201cMeghwal\u201d is indeed derived from \u201cMeghwar\u201d, \u201cMegh\u201d meaning cloud or rain in Sanskrit and \u201cwar\u201d, a group. Thus, &#8220;Meghwal&#8221; refers to a people who belong to the Megh lineage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" src=\"https:\/\/magikindia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/meghwal-kutch-1-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"Kutch\n\" class=\"wp-image-101626\" srcset=\"https:\/\/magikindia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/meghwal-kutch-1-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/magikindia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/meghwal-kutch-1-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/magikindia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/meghwal-kutch-1-720x480.jpg 720w, https:\/\/magikindia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/meghwal-kutch-1.jpg 1134w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption>Meghwal woman posing in front of her house | Photo: Dietmar Time &#8211; Alamy Stock Photo<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The Meghwals are said to come from Sindh, a region that was once part of India before the 1947 partition and is now located in southern Pakistan, surrounded by Balochistan to the west, <a href=\"https:\/\/magikindia.com\/punjab\/\">Punjab <\/a>to the north, <a href=\"https:\/\/magikindia.com\/10-must-see-places-rajasthan\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Rajasthan<\/a> to the east. and finally from the<a href=\"https:\/\/magikindia.com\/rann-kutch-gujarat\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"> Rann of Kutch<\/a> to the south. This same community is also found in the <a href=\"https:\/\/magikindia.com\/jammu-kashmir\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Kashmir valley<\/a>, in Punjab and in Rajasthan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With the advancement of education in India, an increasing number of Meghwals leave to work in the big megalopolises but, traditionally, their activities were agriculture, animal husbandry, weaving and embroidery.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" src=\"https:\/\/magikindia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/meghwal-broderie-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"Kutch\n\" class=\"wp-image-101181\" srcset=\"https:\/\/magikindia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/meghwal-broderie-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/magikindia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/meghwal-broderie-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/magikindia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/meghwal-broderie-1200x800.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/magikindia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/meghwal-broderie-720x480.jpg 720w, https:\/\/magikindia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/meghwal-broderie.jpg 1219w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption>Meghwal village in the Banni region and its many stalls displaying embroidery work<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>However, there are still a few places in the Kutch district, notably in the <strong>Banni region,<\/strong> where we can still observe a handful of typical villages (although a bit touristy) and the art of Meghwal embroidery.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The women of this community wear flamboyant traditional outfits generally in shades of red (obtained using a local pigment) with an exuberance of embroidery and the incorporation of aabhla (small round mirrors). It is indeed built of mud bricks dried in the sun, the frame is covered with thatch and the interior insulation of the roof is made up of bamboos as well as dried grasses. Originally, the Jats are believed to have lived in an area called Halaf in Iran. Five hundred years ago, these shepherds migrated from Halaf to Sindh (now Pakistan) and then to Kutch in search of new pastures. They crossed the<a href=\"https:\/\/magikindia.com\/rann-kutch-gujarat\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"> Rann of Kutch<\/a> and settled in the region of Banni; they then embarked on agriculture. If the traditional clothes of men are rather banal, those of women on the other hand are distinguished by their bright colors and their bodice patterns. The exact origin of this community still remains a mystery and it is still subject to debate.
