Idols of the Hindu pantheon then were carved in the Undavalli caves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" src=\"https:\/\/magikindia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/undavalli-caves-1-1-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-105279\" srcset=\"https:\/\/magikindia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/undavalli-caves-1-1-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/magikindia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/undavalli-caves-1-1-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/magikindia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/undavalli-caves-1-1-1200x800.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/magikindia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/undavalli-caves-1-1-720x480.jpg 720w, https:\/\/magikindia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/undavalli-caves-1-1.jpg 1219w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption>The second level of the caves is dedicated mainly to Vishnuism<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The Undavalli Caves were carved in three levels into the rock face of a hill overlooking the Krishna River.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The first level comprises a single-pillared hall believed to be the vihara with roughly rock-cut cells.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"520\" src=\"https:\/\/magikindia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/undavalli-caves-9-1024x520.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-105209\" srcset=\"https:\/\/magikindia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/undavalli-caves-9-1024x520.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/magikindia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/undavalli-caves-9-300x152.jpg 300w, https:\/\/magikindia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/undavalli-caves-9-720x366.jpg 720w, https:\/\/magikindia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/undavalli-caves-9.jpg 1219w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption>Beautiful statues adorn the walls of the second level of the cave: the Trimurti, Ganesha and Shiva<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The second level already displays more sophistication, it is mainly dedicated to the god Vishnu accompanied by several representations of the &#8220;Trimurti&#8221;, the Hindu Trinity: Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the same room, in an alcove, stands a superb sculpture of <a href=\"https:\/\/magikindia.com\/ganesha-chaturthi-india\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Ganesha<\/a> in the position of &#8220;rajalilasana&#8221; (the royal seated pose); an imposing and quiet image at the same time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>During my visit, flowers had just been freshly placed on each statue, adding to the charm and beauty of the place.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" src=\"https:\/\/magikindia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/undavalli-caves-1-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-105201\" srcset=\"https:\/\/magikindia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/undavalli-caves-1-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/magikindia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/undavalli-caves-1-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/magikindia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/undavalli-caves-1-1200x800.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/magikindia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/undavalli-caves-1-720x480.jpg 720w, https:\/\/magikindia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/undavalli-caves-1.jpg 1219w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption>The entrance to the third level chamber of the cave<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The third level is the most spectacular: in a narrow room, we happily discover a 5-meter-long statue of Vishnu carved from a single block. The protective god of the universe is represented here in his form of &#8220;Padmanabha&#8221;*, lying on the mythical serpent Sheesha.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>*Padmanabha literally means &#8220;one who has a lotus coming out of his navel&#8221;. The ancient scriptures tell that at the dawn of creation, Lord Vishnu slept on the primordial ocean of Ekarnav. One of them playing the lute is flanked by two lions.
