{"id":105865,"date":"2022-07-23T13:21:00","date_gmt":"2022-07-23T11:21:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/magikindia.com\/?p=105865"},"modified":"2022-07-24T12:24:39","modified_gmt":"2022-07-24T10:24:39","slug":"masrur-le-temple-monolithe-de-la-vallee-de-kangra","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/magikindia.com\/en\/masrur-le-temple-monolithe-de-la-vallee-de-kangra\/","title":{"rendered":"Masrur, the pearl of the Kangra Valley"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Masrur, located 40 km from <a href=\"https:\/\/magikindia.com\/dharamshala-tibetan-refuge\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Dharamshala<\/a> (<a href=\"https:\/\/magikindia.com\/himachal-pradesh\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Himachal Pradesh<\/a>), is most certainly the archaeological pearl of the Kangra Valley. <strong>Although unfinished<\/strong><\/strong>,<strong>there is something majestic about this cave temple, dating from the early 8th century AD and it can be added to the long list of the fabulous monolith sanctuaries of India.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" src=\"https:\/\/magikindia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/masroor-dharamshala-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"masrur\" class=\"wp-image-105891\" srcset=\"https:\/\/magikindia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/masroor-dharamshala-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/magikindia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/masroor-dharamshala-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/magikindia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/masroor-dharamshala-1200x800.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/magikindia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/masroor-dharamshala-720x480.jpg 720w, https:\/\/magikindia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/masroor-dharamshala.jpg 1219w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption>The temple is reflected in the adjoining pond<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The exact dating of the Masrur temple is not known, however as it has similarities with the <a href=\"https:\/\/magikindia.com\/elephanta-caves-maharashtra\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Elephanta <\/a>caves (Mumbai) and the cave temples of <a href=\"https:\/\/magikindia.com\/mahabalipuram-tamil-nadu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Mahabalipuram<\/a> (Tamil Nadu), archaeologists place its construction around the 8th century CE.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is thought to have been built by one of the rulers of the ancient kingdom of Jalandhar (Punjab) or by the Katoch dynasty under the leadership of Yashovarman, the powerful king of Kannauj (<a href=\"https:\/\/magikindia.com\/uttar-pradesh\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Uttar Pradesh<\/a>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" src=\"https:\/\/magikindia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/masrur-temple-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"masrur\" class=\"wp-image-105895\" srcset=\"https:\/\/magikindia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/masrur-temple-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/magikindia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/masrur-temple-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/magikindia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/masrur-temple-1200x800.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/magikindia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/masrur-temple-720x480.jpg 720w, https:\/\/magikindia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/masrur-temple.jpg 1219w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption>The small shrines around the main one<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Masrur is built facing east in the Nagar <a href=\"https:\/\/magikindia.com\/architecture-of-india\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">architectural style<\/a> (northern India) and according to a &#8220;Sarvatobhadra&#8221; plan, that is to say accessible from the four cardinal points. In accordance with the Vastu Shastra, the science of architecture of ancient India, a large pond has been dug in front where the temple is beautifully reflected.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" src=\"https:\/\/magikindia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/masrur-temple-kangra-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"masrur\" class=\"wp-image-105893\" srcset=\"https:\/\/magikindia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/masrur-temple-kangra-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/magikindia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/masrur-temple-kangra-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/magikindia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/masrur-temple-kangra-1200x800.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/magikindia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/masrur-temple-kangra-720x480.jpg 720w, https:\/\/magikindia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/masrur-temple-kangra.jpg 1219w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption>View of the pond from the top of the Sikharas<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With its many sikharas (spines), Masrur is reminiscent of a complex of temples, however it is a single temple, with, in its center, the garbhagriha, (the main shrines) surrounded by several small shrines, twenty-five in total, dedicated, among others, to Vishnu, Indra, <a href=\"https:\/\/magikindia.com\/ganesha-chaturthi-india\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Ganesha<\/a>, Kartikeya and Durga.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The temple is carved in situ from a single block of sandstone. Flaws in the structure of the rock could be one of the explanations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to a local legend, the Pandava brothers of the Mahabharata epic resided here &#8220;incognito&#8221; during their exile from their kingdom and built this temple. It is made in the &#8220;latina&#8221; type (curvilinear) with a series of horizontal slabs superimposed and placed in offsets. The surface is covered with tracery; the whole being to recreate the aspect of a mountain. Sikhara is also translated as &#8220;mountain peak&#8221;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\"
