{"id":109979,"date":"2023-07-06T13:11:28","date_gmt":"2023-07-06T11:11:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/magikindia.com\/?p=109979"},"modified":"2023-08-24T10:19:27","modified_gmt":"2023-08-24T08:19:27","slug":"le-temple-de-menal-rajasthan","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/magikindia.com\/en\/le-temple-de-menal-rajasthan\/","title":{"rendered":"Menal, Shaivite jewel of Rajasthan"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Located on the road between <a href=\"https:\/\/magikindia.com\/en\/bundi-rajasthan\/\">Bundi<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/magikindia.com\/en\/chittorgarh-rajasthan\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Chittorgarh<\/a>, the Menal temple complex is an essential cultural stopover in <a href=\"https:\/\/magikindia.com\/en\/10-must-see-places-rajasthan\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Rajasthan<\/a>. This ancient site, in addition to being an architectural gem, was a high place of Shaivism during the reign of the Chahaman sovereigns in the 11th century AD.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Menal takes its name from &#8220;Maha Nal&#8221; which means &#8220;great gorge&#8221; in reference to the canyon which divides the site in two. Although not confirmed by records, historians believe that the buildings on the left side of the canyon are attributed to King Someshvar Chahaman of the Shakambhari dynasty, while the single temple with a detached monastery on the other side of the river is associated with his queen, Suhavadevi.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The major site (on the left), comprises a complex of buildings, some in ruins, with the main Mahanaleshvara temple at its centre.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" src=\"https:\/\/magikindia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/menal-temple-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-109985\" srcset=\"https:\/\/magikindia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/menal-temple-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/magikindia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/menal-temple-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/magikindia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/menal-temple-720x480.jpg 720w, https:\/\/magikindia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/menal-temple.jpg 1134w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">The entrance to the main complex<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The entrance to the main complex already says a lot about the beauty of the site. It is done through a two-storey mandala-pavilion whose pillars are beautifully carved with various Shaivite deities such as Bhairav, an epitome of the god Shiva in his terrifying form.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Bhairav is often posted at the entrance to temples as a ksetrapala (guardian). The bhumija variant of Nagara architecture (north India) originated in <a href=\"https:\/\/magikindia.com\/madhya-pradesh\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Madhya Pradesh<\/a>. Nandi is the &#8220;vahana&#8221; (vehicle) of Lord Shiva. It dates back to the 8th century AD. Dedicated respectively to the god Ganesha and Gauri, their sikhara is damaged but beautiful carved pillars are still intact with niches dedicated to Lakulisha (a 2nd century CE ascetic, considered the last of the 28 avatars of Shiva), Nataraja (the Shiva cosmic dancer) and Ardhanarisvara (half-Shiva, half-parvati).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" src=\"https:\/\/magikindia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/menal-temple-1-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"Menal\" class=\"wp-image-110018\" srcset=\"https:\/\/magikindia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/menal-temple-1-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/magikindia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/menal-temple-1-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/magikindia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/menal-temple-1-720x480.jpg 720w, https:\/\/magikindia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/menal-temple-1.jpg 1134w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">A temple with twin shrines next to the main temple is believed to date from the 8th century CE<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Behind this temple, there is another building dedicated to Shiva with a hypostyle mandapa which was built on the site to serve as a math (monastery).
