{"id":118506,"date":"2024-05-27T12:52:35","date_gmt":"2024-05-27T10:52:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/magikindia.com\/?p=118506"},"modified":"2024-05-27T12:54:08","modified_gmt":"2024-05-27T10:54:08","slug":"momaji-the-temples-of-the-raika-rabari","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/magikindia.com\/en\/momaji-the-temples-of-the-raika-rabari\/","title":{"rendered":"Momaji, the temples of the Rabari Raikas"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Since the battle of <a href=\"https:\/\/magikindia.com\/en\/sarneshwar-mahadev-sirohi\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Sirohi<\/a>, the close ties that have been established between the Rajputs and the Ra\u00efka Rabaris are no longer in doubt. The latter, simple camel breeders at the base, have repeatedly sacrificed their lives fighting alongside the Maharajas. It is therefore not surprising that this pastoral community is highly respected by the Rajputs and that the <a href=\"https:\/\/magikindia.com\/en\/rabari-people\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Rabaris <\/a>worship Rajput heroes in return. The Momaji warrior temples in the southwest region of Rajasthan are the best examples.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The legend<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Momaji or Mamaji are popular temples in the Godwad region of <a href=\"https:\/\/magikindia.com\/en\/10-must-see-places-rajasthan\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Rajasthan <\/a>which includes the districts of Jalore, Sirohi and Pali<\/strong>. As is often the case with legends in India, there are multiple versions. The one I&#8217;m going to tell you now is the most popular.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" src=\"https:\/\/magikindia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/11\/momaji-mandir-rabari-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"momaji\" class=\"wp-image-113647\" srcset=\"https:\/\/magikindia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/11\/momaji-mandir-rabari-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/magikindia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/11\/momaji-mandir-rabari-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/magikindia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/11\/momaji-mandir-rabari-1200x800.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/magikindia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/11\/momaji-mandir-rabari-720x480.jpg 720w, https:\/\/magikindia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/11\/momaji-mandir-rabari.jpg 1219w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Momaji Open Air Temple &#8211; Mount Abu<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>It must first be clarified that Momaji is not associated with a single deity, but with several valiant Rajput warriors who, at different times, fought to protect the <a href=\"https:\/\/magikindia.com\/en\/rabari-people\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Rabari pastoral community<\/a>.<\/strong> They are known by various names: Dalpat singh, Ganga singh, Dalji, Gongji, Bhoomiya Singh Rathore, Shardul Singh, Dhoneri Veer or Bhursingji to name a few.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"690\" src=\"https:\/\/magikindia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/11\/rao-bika-1024x690.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-114393\" srcset=\"https:\/\/magikindia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/11\/rao-bika-1024x690.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/magikindia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/11\/rao-bika-300x202.jpg 300w, https:\/\/magikindia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/11\/rao-bika-720x485.jpg 720w, https:\/\/magikindia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/11\/rao-bika.jpg 1134w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Rao Bika founder of Bikaner, Rathore Rajput dynasty<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>The story begins with the ruler Mandala ji Rathore (one of the 24 sons of King Ranmal of <a href=\"https:\/\/magikindia.com\/en\/jodhpur-rajasthan\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Mandore<\/a>) who established his stronghold around<a href=\"https:\/\/magikindia.com\/en\/bikaner-rajasthan\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"> Bikaner <\/a>in Rajasthan.<\/strong> Within his clan was the Thakur Hemsingh Mandalawat, who, unable to have an heir, performed severe penances to obtain the grace of <a href=\"https:\/\/magikindia.com\/en\/bikaner-rajasthan\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Devi Karni Mata<\/a> (the goddess of the rat temple). She then uttered bitter words: &#8220;Brother, my husband was killed by the Meenas and they stole all my cows! Bhursingji then freed all the cows and returned them to his sister.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>On his return, the son of the panihari touched Moma&#8217;s feet and told him that from today onwards the whole world would know him as &#8220;MOMAJI&#8221;<\/strong>. The latter suddenly took out his sword and slit his own throat. The charm of these temples comes mainly from its rows of multicolored horses of all sizes<\/strong>. They represent the offerings made to the temple by the faithful in order to fulfill a wish. Here again we find this notion of a votive horse specific to different communities in India, such as, for example, among the<a href=\"https:\/\/magikindia.com\/en\/bhagoria-rathwas\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"> Rathwa people <\/a>or the adivasis of <a href=\"https:\/\/magikindia.com\/en\/poshina-terracotta-horses-and-garasia-people\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Poshina<\/a> in Gujarat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" src=\"https:\/\/magikindia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/11\/momaji-mandir-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"momaji\" class=\"wp-image-113991\" srcset=\"https:\/\/magikindia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/11\/momaji-mandir-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/magikindia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/11\/momaji-mandir-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/magikindia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/11\/momaji-mandir-720x480.jpg 720w, https:\/\/magikindia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/11\/momaji-mandir.jpg 1134w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Ancient votive horses (left) &#8211; Temple at Momaji in Ranakpur<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>In the center of the temple sit imposing statues on horseback of different Rajput warriors.<\/strong> They are always accompanied by a<a href=\"https:\/\/magikindia.com\/en\/shakti-peetha-pilgrimage\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"> Shakti,<\/a> often personified by the Hindu goddess Chamunda.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Chamunda, is a form of Kali, the fierce goddess, who is one of the seven Matrikas (mother goddesses) as well as the <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/magikindia.com\/en\/shakti-peetha-pilgrimage\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>64 Yoginis.<\/strong> <\/a>The story goes that when Goddess Durga was involved in a war with the demons Munda and Chanda, Kali materialized on Durga&#8217;s forehead and killed the asuras. Pleased with Kali, Durga named her Chamunda.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" src=\"https:\/\/magikindia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/11\/maji-momaji-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"momaji\" class=\"wp-image-113981\" srcset=\"https:\/\/magikindia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/11\/maji-momaji-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/magikindia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/11\/maji-momaji-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/magikindia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/11\/maji-momaji-720x480.jpg 720w, https:\/\/magikindia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/11\/maji-momaji.jpg 1134w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Shakti, here the goddess Chamunda, is always present in a temple in Momaji<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>In this temple room, a cushion is placed with a sheaf of peacock feathers called &#8220;morpankh&#8221;.<\/strong> It is the seat of the \u201cBhopaji\u201d or \u201cBaa\u201d, a kind of Shaman Rabari. For devotees, the Bhopaji has the power to invoke Goddess Durga.
