{"id":118614,"date":"2024-05-28T13:01:42","date_gmt":"2024-05-28T11:01:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/magikindia.com\/?p=118614"},"modified":"2024-05-28T13:01:46","modified_gmt":"2024-05-28T11:01:46","slug":"khavda-the-pottery-of-the-indus-valley","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/magikindia.com\/en\/khavda-the-pottery-of-the-indus-valley\/","title":{"rendered":"Khavda, the pottery of the Indus Valley"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>In the north of the district of <a href=\"https:\/\/magikindia.com\/en\/bhuj-gujarat\/\">Kutch<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/magikindia.com\/en\/must-see-places-gujarat\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"> (Gujarat)<\/a>, on the edge of the great white desert, is the village of Khavda which gave its name to a very specific ceramic, whose origins date back to the thousand-year-old civilization of the Indus Valley. While the art of pottery from this region has survived since the Bronze Age, it struggles to find its place in the modern world.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<p>Abdul Bhai&#8217;s family workshop is at the end of a bumpy country lane, which is hard to find the first time you go there. This family of kumbhars (potters) from Sindh (present-day Pakistan) has been practicing this craft for generations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" src=\"https:\/\/magikindia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2028\/05\/khavda-pottery-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"Khavda\" class=\"wp-image-115708\" srcset=\"https:\/\/magikindia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2028\/05\/khavda-pottery-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/magikindia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2028\/05\/khavda-pottery-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/magikindia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2028\/05\/khavda-pottery-720x480.jpg 720w, https:\/\/magikindia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2028\/05\/khavda-pottery.jpg 1134w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Rahima ben working on a plate<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>When we arrive, Rahima Ben, Abdul&#8217;s wife, is finishing the decoration of a plate by adding white dots using a bamboo twig. She raises her head and recognizes me, this is the second time I meet this friendly artisan. It is recognizable by its reddish-brown color and its black patterns punctuated with white dots.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This pottery is said to have its origins in the Indus Valley. In 1968, when the archaeological site of Dholavira*, an hour from Khavda, was discovered, ceramics with similarities to those of Khavda were unearthed. We find there in particular the black drawings on a red background. It is one of the very few well-preserved urban settlements in South Asia dating from the 3rd to mid-2nd millennium BCE.
