{"id":125718,"date":"2025-05-05T17:02:10","date_gmt":"2025-05-05T15:02:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/magikindia.com\/?p=125718"},"modified":"2025-05-05T17:28:50","modified_gmt":"2025-05-05T15:28:50","slug":"nawalgarh-the-golden-city-of-shekhawati","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/magikindia.com\/en\/nawalgarh-the-golden-city-of-shekhawati\/","title":{"rendered":"Nawalgarh, the golden city of Shekhawati"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Nawalgarh is a major city in <a href=\"https:\/\/magikindia.com\/en\/shekhawati-rajasthan\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Shekhawati,<\/a> a semi-desert region in northern <a href=\"http:\/\/Rajasthan\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Rajasthan<\/a>. Founded in the mid-18th century, it became one of India&#8217;s most prosperous cities in the following century thanks to the &#8220;Marwaris,&#8221; merchants who made their fortunes on the Thar Desert trade route and later in various industries based in Mumbai and<a href=\"https:\/\/magikindia.com\/en\/kolkata-west-bengal\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"> Kolkata.<\/a> Its nickname, the &#8220;City of Gold,&#8221; refers to this former wealth. The Marwaris displayed their opulence by building palatial mansions adorned with lavish frescoes. There are over 600 of these throughout the city, most of which have sadly fallen into disrepair. A handful have been restored, and only three are open to the public: Podar Haveli, Morarka Haveli, and Bansidhar Bhagat Haveli.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Podar haveli<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" src=\"https:\/\/magikindia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/podar-haveli-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"Nawalgarh \" class=\"wp-image-119285\" srcset=\"https:\/\/magikindia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/podar-haveli-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/magikindia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/podar-haveli-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/magikindia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/podar-haveli-720x480.jpg 720w, https:\/\/magikindia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/podar-haveli.jpg 1134w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">One of the exterior walls of the Podar haveli with frescoes galore<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Let&#8217;s start with the most famous haveli in Nawalgarh, the Podar haveli in the west of the city.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>This haveli was built in 1902 by Sheth Anandilal Podar, a prominent Marwari businessman from Mumbai with interests in cotton mills. <\/strong>In 1927, he founded the Podar Group of Schools Trust, and the haveli was subsequently used as a school in 1955. In 2007, his grandson, Kanti Kumar Podar, converted the haveli into a museum and named it the Dr. Ramnath A. It was built in 1900 by Shri Jairamdasji Morarka, a connoisseur and patron of the arts. Lalita is one of the &#8220;Ashtasakhi,&#8221; that is, one of the eight eminent gopis, along with Vishaka, Champaklata, Chitra, Tungavidhya, Induleka, Rangadevi, and Sudevi.
