Meaning of<\/strong> Uttarayan<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Uttarayan means literally “when the sun starts its northward journey<\/strong>“. In the Indian calendar Uttarayan marks the end of winter and the return of the sun and its warmth to the northern hemisphere.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This change of season has various names in different parts of India,<\/strong> and the celebrations differ too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In several northern states it is called Makar Sankranti<\/em><\/strong>, since this is when the sun moves into the sign of Capricorn (Makar<\/em> in Hindi). Sankranti<\/em> is word for the sun’s transit from one sign of the zodiac to the next.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In Punjab, this change is called “Lohri” and celebrates the winter harvest; <\/strong>people thank the sun (Surya) for its benefits. It is held one day before Uttarayan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In Southern India<\/strong>, mainly in Tamil Nadu, this period of time corresponds to Pongal.<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

This transition is the start of a six-month period that the Hindus consider auspicious. It is sometimes called the “holy period”, and it is the moment when the wedding season starts again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Although the names and celebrations vary, the date is the same throughout the Indian subcontinent.<\/strong> Under the Gregorian calendar Uttarayan celebrations take place on 13 or 14 January.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the north, Uttarayan is traditionally celebrated by a “patang”(kite flying) festival.<\/strong> The one in Gujarat<\/a>,<\/strong> north-western India, is particularly popular and everyone looks forward eagerly to the kite jousting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Families buy their patang<\/em> (“kites”) or make their own from thin paper stretched over bamboo struts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When the string is cut the custom is to cry out “Kade!<\/em>” “Kapyo che!<\/em>” (“I’ve cut your kite!) “Lapet lapet!<\/em>” (“Wind up your string!”).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This festival is a grand moment for socialising.<\/strong> Families and friends gather on the flat roofs of the houses and thousands of multicoloured kites fill the sky from morning to dusk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
