Some theories trace the lingam back to the ancient fertility cults probably due to its phallic form.&nbsp;But though it is easy to jump to conclusions, it is a mistake to think of the Shiva lingam in purely sexual terms;&nbsp;The Sanskrit word <em>lingam<\/em> means &#8216;sign&#8217; or &#8216;symbol&#8217;. So the literal meaning of <em>Shiva lingam<\/em> is &#8216;Shiva&#8217;s sign&#8221;. It is the symbolic form of the god Shiva, the divinity without form, the&nbsp;source of the universe, the infinite into which everything merges at the end of time.<\/strong><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Here are different approaches to understand what is the lingam.<\/p>\n<hr>\n<h3>The Shiva-lingam as a cosmic egg<\/h3>\n<hr>\n<p><em>&#8220;In the beginning was Hiranyagarbha, the seed of the elementary existence, the only Lord from where everything was&nbsp;born, he maintains heaven and earth. To what other God but Him, may we dedicate our lives? &#8220;<\/em>(Atharva Veda)<\/p>\n<p><strong>According to the Brahmanda Purana, the Shiva lingam was originally egg-shaped, representing the universe. It is called Brahmanda, the cosmic egg (<em>Brahman<\/em> is Sanskrit for &#8216;cosmos&#8217; or &#8216;expansion&#8217; and <em>anda<\/em> means &#8216;egg&#8217;).<\/strong><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_42370\" style=\"width: 710px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/magikindia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/Lingodbhava-20081.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-42370\" class=\"wp-image-42370\" src=\"https:\/\/magikindia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/Lingodbhava-20081.jpg\" alt=\"lingam\" width=\"700\" height=\"471\" srcset=\"https:\/\/magikindia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/Lingodbhava-20081.jpg 465w, https:\/\/magikindia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/Lingodbhava-20081-300x202.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-42370\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Egg-shaped lingam, Sri Premananda Ashram<\/p><\/div>\n<p><strong>The Upanishads, Hinduism&#8217;s founding scriptures, speak of Hiranyagarbha which means &#8216;golden foetus&#8217; or &#8216;golden belly&#8217;.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>These scriptures hold that Hiranyagarbha floated in emptiness for a time, then broke into two to form Dyaus, the Sky, and Prithvi, the Earth. Thus the Hiranyagarbha gave birth to the universe and everything in it, including the masculine and feminine principles.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The idea of a cosmic egg can be found in many civilisations. In ancient Greece there was the Orphic egg, the Egyptians had the egg of the Ogdoad, etc.<\/strong><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_42382\" style=\"width: 729px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/magikindia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/ddd.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-42382\" class=\"wp-image-42382 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/magikindia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/ddd.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"719\" height=\"481\" srcset=\"https:\/\/magikindia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/ddd.jpg 719w, https:\/\/magikindia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/ddd-300x201.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 719px) 100vw, 719px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-42382\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The egg of the Ogdoad &#8211; Egypt &#8211; Book of the Dead of Khensumose<\/p><\/div>\n<hr>\n<h3>The Shiva-lingam as union and creative energy<\/h3>\n<hr>\n<p><strong>Some lingams are inserted into a cylindrical base called a <em>yoni<\/em>&nbsp;meaning \u2018vagina\u2019&nbsp;in&nbsp;sanskrit.&nbsp;These Shiva lingams, or lingam-yonis, can be understood as the union of the two complementary poles, male and female.<\/strong><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_42376\" style=\"width: 719px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/magikindia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/lingam.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-42376\" class=\"wp-image-42376 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/magikindia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/lingam.jpg\" alt=\"lingam\" width=\"709\" height=\"484\" srcset=\"https:\/\/magikindia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/lingam.jpg 709w, https:\/\/magikindia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/lingam-300x205.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 709px) 100vw, 709px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-42376\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Shivalingam in Varanasi, Nepali temple<\/p><\/div>\n<p><strong>This union is illustrated by a hindu myth.<\/strong> One day when Shiva and his consort Parvati were in their home on the peak of Mount Kailash, Parvati playfully covered Shiva&#8217;s eyes. For these gods it lasted a fraction of a second, but Earth was plunged in darkness for years. Parvati had to perform many austerities to win back Shiva&#8217;s trust, starting her penances in the Himalayas and finishing them on <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/magikindia.com\/inde-du-sud\/tamil-nadu\/tiruvannamalai\/\">Arunachala<\/a><\/strong> Hill in South India. There Shiva appeared in a pillar of fire and light returned to the world. Shiva merged with Parvati to form Ardhanarishvara, a being that is half man, half woman.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_42384\" style=\"width: 716px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/magikindia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/shiva-devi.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-42384\" class=\"wp-image-42384\" src=\"https:\/\/magikindia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/shiva-devi.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"706\" height=\"515\" srcset=\"https:\/\/magikindia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/shiva-devi.jpg 684w, https:\/\/magikindia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/shiva-devi-300x219.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 706px) 100vw, 706px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-42384\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Ardhanarishvara, half Shiva, half Parvati<\/p><\/div>\n<p><strong>At a more subtle level the Shiva lingam is the union of Prakriti (active energy) and Purusha (consciousness)<\/strong>. Seen in this light the Yoni is primordial energy (Shakti or Devi) uniting with Divine Consciousness (the lingam or Shiva). Shakti allow consciousness to materialise, to become manifest. All things are created by this union and nothing can exist or change without it.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The lingam and yoni can also be regarded as the Earth (yoni) turning around the sun (lingam).<\/strong> The sun itself turns around other stars, creating its own yoni, and this repeats to infinity.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-13670 \" src=\"https:\/\/magikindia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/univers.jpg\" alt=\"univers\" width=\"720\" height=\"443\" srcset=\"https:\/\/magikindia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/univers.jpg 465w, https:\/\/magikindia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/univers-300x184.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 720px) 100vw, 720px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<hr>\n<h3>The Shiva-lingam and the Trimurti<\/h3>\n<hr>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/magikindia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/lingam-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"709\" height=\"531\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-42395\" src=\"https:\/\/magikindia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/lingam-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"https:\/\/magikindia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/lingam-1.jpg 709w, https:\/\/magikindia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/lingam-1-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 709px) 100vw, 709px\" \/><\/a> Shiva lingam is made up of three parts, representing the Trimurti (Bhrahma,Vishnu and Shiva).<\/strong> The part that touches the ground is called Brahma-Peetha and represents the creation of the universe. The middle part is the Vishnu-Peetha and preserves creation, while the top part, Shiva-Peetha, symbolises destruction or absorption.<\/p>\n<hr>\n<h3>The Shiva-lingam as a pillar of light<\/h3>\n<hr>\n<p><strong>The Shiva Purana describes the lingam as a pillar of light or fire whose base and top are unfindable. Lingams that symbolise this pillar of light are called <a href=\"https:\/\/magikindia.com\/jyotir-lingam-pilgrimage\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jyotir lingams<\/a><\/strong>. <strong>There are twelve in different parts of India and they are the most revered of all Shiva lingams.<\/strong><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_42378\" style=\"width: 719px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/magikindia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/lingam-jyotir.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-42378\" class=\"wp-image-42378 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/magikindia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/lingam-jyotir.jpg\" alt=\"lingam\" width=\"709\" height=\"609\" srcset=\"https:\/\/magikindia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/lingam-jyotir.jpg 709w, https:\/\/magikindia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/lingam-jyotir-300x258.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 709px) 100vw, 709px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-42378\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Shiva appearing in the pillar of light &#8211; Puddukotai, Tamil Nadu<\/p><\/div>\n<p><strong>The Siva Mahapurana, an ancient mythological and religious scripture, tells of a quarrel between Brahma the creator and Vishnu the preserver.<\/strong>&nbsp;<strong>Each claimed to be the Supreme Lord and a terrible battle ensued, plunging the universe in confusion and causing great distress to living creatures.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Shiva was moved by compassion and manifested in a blazing pillar of light, challenging Brahma and Vishnu to find the base and top of the pillar. Brahma took the form of a sign and vanished into the sky, hoping to see the top of the pillar. Vishnu took the form of a boar and dug down into the earth to find its base.<\/p>\n<p>Neither could find what they were looking for. They came back exhausted and disoriented. At that moment, the central part of the pillar opened up and Shiva was revealed in all his glory. Most of these are oval-shaped stones. They are found only in the bed of the River Narmada in <a href=\"https:\/\/magikindia.com\/omkareshwar-madhya-pradesh\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Omkareshwar<\/b>,<\/a> Madhya Pradesh, and are thus also called &#8216;Narmada lingams&#8217;. Those lingams are shaped naturally by the river itself.
