Its rich history goes back over 4000 years, with some remarkable vestiges to tell the tale. The finest is the Hatkeshwar Mahadev temple. <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A little <strong>history <\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>More than 4000 years ago the town was known as Chamatkarpur<\/strong>. It was named after a king who was cured of leprosy by bathing in the town&#8217;s sacred lake. In gratitude, the king built many temples and palaces here.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>It is also said that the famous sage (or <em>rishi<\/em>) Yagyavalkya,<\/strong> whose name means &#8220;Knower of the Vedas&#8221;, had his ashram in the town.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/magikindia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/Xuanzang_w.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1134\" height=\"1051\" src=\"https:\/\/magikindia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/Xuanzang_w.jpg\" alt=\"Vadnagar\" class=\"wp-image-51713\" srcset=\"https:\/\/magikindia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/Xuanzang_w.jpg 1134w, https:\/\/magikindia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/Xuanzang_w-300x278.jpg 300w, https:\/\/magikindia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/Xuanzang_w-1024x949.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/magikindia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/Xuanzang_w-863x800.jpg 863w, https:\/\/magikindia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/Xuanzang_w-720x667.jpg 720w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1134px) 100vw, 1134px\" \/><\/a><figcaption>Hiuen-Tsang, a famous Chinese pilgrim who visited India in the 7th century AD |<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tnm.jp\/?lang=en\" target=\"_blank\">Tokyo National Museum<\/a><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>In the 6th century CE, both <a rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/magikindia.com\/culture-india\/spirituality\/\" target=\"_blank\">Buddhism and Jainism<\/a> had a presence in Vadnagar.<\/strong> The famous Chinese pilgrim Hiuen-Tsang, who visited Vadnagar in 640 CE, wrote in his travelogue that there were 10 Buddhist monasteries with 1000 monks in Vadnagar. In 2009 the <a rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/magikindia.com\/north-india\/gujarat\/\" target=\"_blank\">Gujarat <\/a>Department of Archaeology discovered the remains of a Buddhist monastery in the town.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignnone size-full\"><a href=\"https:\/\/magikindia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/vadnagar-4.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"820\" height=\"556\" src=\"https:\/\/magikindia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/vadnagar-4.jpg\" alt=\"Vadnagar\" class=\"wp-image-51718\" srcset=\"https:\/\/magikindia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/vadnagar-4.jpg 820w, https:\/\/magikindia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/vadnagar-4-300x203.jpg 300w, https:\/\/magikindia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/vadnagar-4-720x488.jpg 720w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 820px) 100vw, 820px\" \/><\/a><figcaption>Ruins of a Buddhist monastery in Vadnagar | Photo : <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"http:\/\/asi.nic.in\" target=\"_blank\">ASI<\/a><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>After some four centuries of peace under the Solanki dynasty (942 to 1244 CE)<\/strong>, the powerful armies of the <a href=\"https:\/\/magikindia.com\/culture-india\/history-of-india\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Delhi Sultanate<\/a> marched on Gujarat. Vadnagar was sacked and burned, its elite massacred. Unfortunaltey not well maintained.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Saptarshi Aro<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/magikindia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/vadnagar-3.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" Parikh<\/a><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>If you have a good guide (which was not my case), he\/she will certainly lead you to the <strong>Saptarshi<\/strong> (&#8220;the seven sages&#8221;) located beside a pond to the east of Sharmishtha Lake.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It was once surrounded by fine buildings and temples, and had stone steps all round leading down to the water.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It is thought that this is where the saint Yagyavalkya set up his ashram.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Old gates<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignnone\"><a Kumarpal in 1152 AD.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Today the fort&#8217;s perimeter wall had largely been destroyed, but five of the six gateways remain, each one built to a different interesting
