It is said that after Lord Rama had vanquished the demon Ravana in Sri Lanka, he and his spouse Sita stopped here on their way home ; so it is not surprising that the Solanki sovereigns should have chosen this holy ground to build a magnificent and wholly unique sun temple.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The Legend<\/strong> <strong>of<\/strong> Modhera<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Modhera is said to be the original home of the Modha Brahmans<\/strong>. According to the legend, this caste received Modhera as a <em>krsnarpana <\/em>(gift) on the occasion of Rama and Sita&#8217;s marriage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"768\" height=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/magikindia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/modheshwari-goddess-768x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-60055\" srcset=\"https:\/\/magikindia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/modheshwari-goddess-768x1024.jpg 768w, https:\/\/magikindia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/modheshwari-goddess-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/magikindia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/modheshwari-goddess-600x800.jpg 600w, https:\/\/magikindia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/modheshwari-goddess-540x720.jpg 540w, https:\/\/magikindia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/modheshwari-goddess.jpg 850w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 768px) 100vw, 768px\" \/><figcaption>Goddess Modheshwari<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-very-light-gray-background-color has-background wp-block-paragraph\">In the mythological tales of the Skanda Purana, after he had vanquished Ravana, Rama consulted the sage Vashistha Muni and asked him to show him a Dharmaranya Kshetra (place of penitence) where he could purify himself of the sin of <em>Brahma hatya<\/em> (murder of a Brahman). The sage showed him the Modhera region. Lord Rama settled in a village called Modherak where he performed a <em>yajna<\/em> (fire ritual). It is believed that Modherak was today&#8217;s village of Modhera.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>A temple dedicated to the goddess Modheshwari, a deity of the Modha Brahman caste, originally stood in the Sun Temple complex<\/strong>. The existing one is west of the town of Mehsana, 15km from Modhera. Modheshwari is the chief goddess of Gujarat and as such there are numerous temples of the goddess all over the state.&nbsp;Matangi Modeshwari Mata is an aspect of the <a href=\"https:\/\/magikindia.com\/shakti-peetha-pilgrimage\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">goddess Durga<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She is depicted as having 18 arms, each holding a weapon or accessory such as a <em>trishula<\/em> (trident), a <em>khadga<\/em> (sword), <em>talwar<\/em> (sabre), <em>kamandala <\/em>(pot), <em>shankha<\/em> (conch shell), <em>gada<\/em> (club) and a <em>damaru<\/em> (drum).&nbsp;She is usually shown to be seated on a lion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The story<\/strong> <strong>of<\/strong> the temple<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>The Modhera Sun Temple, on the banks of the Pushpawati 100km from <a rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/magikindia.com\/ahmedabad-gujarat\/\" target=\"_blank\">Ahmedabad<\/a>, was built in 1026 in the reign of Bhima Deva I (Solanki dynasty).<\/strong> The Solankis believed they were descended from the <em>Suryavamsha, <\/em>the lineage of the sun god Surya, so they dedicated their temple to him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" src=\"https:\/\/magikindia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/modhera-sun-temple-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-60002\" srcset=\"https:\/\/magikindia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/modhera-sun-temple-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/magikindia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/modhera-sun-temple-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/magikindia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/modhera-sun-temple-1200x800.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/magikindia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/modhera-sun-temple-720x480.jpg 720w, https:\/\/magikindia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/modhera-sun-temple.jpg 1234w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>The Solanki kings were great builders and patrons of the arts<\/strong>. Their fame is inscribed in stone to this day, for example with the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/magikindia.com\/patan-gujarat\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Rani-Ki-Vav in Patan<\/a>,<\/strong> the Jain temples in Taranga and the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/magikindia.com\/siddhpur-gujarat\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Rudra Mahal in Siddhpur<\/a>.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Modhera temple has as powerful an aura as India&#8217;s other, more famous sun temples at Martand in Cashmere and <a href=\"https:\/\/magikindia.com\/konark-odisha\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Konark<\/strong> <\/a>in Odisha<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The Architecture<\/strong> <strong>of<\/strong> Modhera Sun Temple<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The temple was badly damaged during the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/magikindia.com\/culture-india\/history-of-india\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Mughal invasions<\/a>,<\/strong> but what remains is still magnificent and a clear indication of its past beauty and the sacred nature of the site.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" src=\"https:\/\/magikindia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/modhera-sun-temple-gujarat-3-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-60049\" srcset=\"https:\/\/magikindia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/modhera-sun-temple-gujarat-3-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/magikindia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/modhera-sun-temple-gujarat-3-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/magikindia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/modhera-sun-temple-gujarat-3-1200x800.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/magikindia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/modhera-sun-temple-gujarat-3-720x480.jpg 720w, https:\/\/magikindia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/modhera-sun-temple-gujarat-3.jpg 1234w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-very-light-gray-background-color has-background wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>The temple complex is an engineering wonder, built in compliance with the S<em>hilpa Shastras<\/em><\/strong>. In the ancient scriptures the Sanskrit term <em>silpa sastra<\/em> means the science of the arts and crafts. In terms of temple design, <em>Shilpa Shastras<\/em> or <em>Vaastu Shastras<\/em> were manuals prescribing, among other things, the proportions of a sculpted figure, the principles of composition, symbolism, and the rules of <a href=\"https:\/\/magikindia.com\/culture-india\/architecture-of-india\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">architecture<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Astronomical principles were also incorporated:<\/strong> built on the tropic of Cancer, the temple was so designed that at the two equinoxes the sun&#8217;s first rays fell on the main idol.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Surya temple consists of 3&nbsp;distinct elements&nbsp;in alignment:<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The Rama Kund or Surya Kund<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" src=\"https:\/\/magikindia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/modhera-sun-temple-1-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-60008\" srcset=\"https:\/\/magikindia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/modhera-sun-temple-1-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/magikindia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/modhera-sun-temple-1-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/magikindia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/modhera-sun-temple-1-720x480.jpg 720w, https:\/\/magikindia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/modhera-sun-temple-1.jpg 1134w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption>Surya Kund<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The first thing you encounter at the complex is a superb, perfectly geometrical bathing tank, 50m x 20m, where devotees performed their ritual ablutions. Four larger shrines are dedicated to Vishnu (on the east side), Ganesha and Sitala Mata (south) and Nataraja (west). The <em>kund<\/em> has four landings linked by staircases in the pyramid pattern typical of the <em>baoli <\/em>stepwells of<strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/magikindia.com\/north-india\/gujarat\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Gujarat.<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Sabha Mandapa<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A large <em>torana<\/em> (archway), of which all that remains today are two finely carved pillars, led to the Sabha Mandapa.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"992\" height=\"661\" src=\"https:\/\/magikindia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/modhera-sun-temple-gujarat-1.jpg\" alt=\"Modhera\" class=\"wp-image-60006\" srcset=\"https:\/\/magikindia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/modhera-sun-temple-gujarat-1.jpg 992w, https:\/\/magikindia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/modhera-sun-temple-gujarat-1-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/magikindia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/modhera-sun-temple-gujarat-1-720x480.jpg 720w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 992px) 100vw, 992px\" \/><figcaption>The large torana<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Sabha Mandapa (&#8220;assembly hall&#8221;) was built for religious gatherings. It is octagonal in plan, open on all sides and features 52 delicately carved pillars.
