The old town and its many <em>pols<\/em> or districts with their finely carved mansions (<em>havelis<\/em>) bear witness to its former wealth. Adding to the city&#8217;s aura are its memories of Mahatma Gandhi, who lived here when striving for India&#8217;s independence.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<p>Ahmedabad, renowned as a trading city since the days of the Muzaffarid and Mughal dynasties, has been called the Manchester of the East because of its role in the textile industry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Its story begins in the 11th century C.E. when King Solanki Karandev I built a city called Karnavati on the banks of the Sabarmati river. In the 15th century the town was renamed Ahmedabad after Ahmed Shah of the Muzaffarid dynasty, who based his sultanate there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ahmedabad is also renowned for the part it played in India&#8217;s fight for independence. Its old <em>pols<\/em> are like quiet refuges in the heart of this restless city. Here you can stroll at ease and admire the <em>havelis<\/em> (private mansions) with their intricately carved fa\u00e7ades.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-very-light-gray-background-color has-background\">A <em>pol<\/em> is a housing cluster inhabited by numerous families of a particular group, linked by caste, profession, or religion. The word comes from the Sanskrit <em>pratoli<\/em> meaning gate or entrance. Originally the <em>pols <\/em>were built as a protective measure in time of communal riots. There is one other statue like this, in Nasik. The temple itself is a beautiful piece of<em> haveli <\/em>architecture with delicately carved columns and angles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-very-light-gray-background-color has-background\">It is said that the statue was installed in the Kala Ramji temple by Brahmans (priests) from <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/magikindia.com\/dwarka-gujarat\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Dwarka<\/strong> <\/a>400 years ago. This mausoleum, dating from 1451, also houses the graves of his son, Muhammed Shah II, and his grandson Ahmed II.
