But Supriya persisted, and was condemned to death.<\/strong> He prayed to Shiva to protect him and began to meditate. The other prisoners recited &#8220;Shiva, Shiva, Shiva!&#8221; in chorus. Suddenly the prison was flooded with light Shiva appeared, garlanded with snakes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The demons were instantly reduced to ashes. Nageshwara (one of Shiva&#8217;s many names) remained in that place like a lingam of light. The place was called Darukavanam and the Jyotir Lingam &#8220;Naganath&#8221; or &#8220;Nageshwara&#8221;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Nageshwar&#8217;s Jyotir lingam<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/magikindia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/dwarka-6.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\" src=\"https:\/\/magikindia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/dwarka-6.jpg\" alt=\"Nageshwar\" class=\"wp-image-51681\" srcset=\"https:\/\/magikindia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/dwarka-6.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/magikindia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/dwarka-6-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/magikindia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/dwarka-6-720x540.jpg 720w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/a><figcaption>Dwaraka Sila,&nbsp;the sacred coral<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Nageshwara is a lingam said to be made of Dwarka Sila or coral stone from the Gomati river in <a rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/magikindia.com\/dwarka-gujarat\/\" target=\"_blank\">Dwarka<\/a>. <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Dwarka Shila is a sacred stone to Hindus; it is marked with <em>chakras<\/em> (wheel-like motifs). The number of <em>chakras<\/em> on a stone determines which god it is dedicated to.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Puranas (old sacred scriptures) say that anyone who touches a Dwarka Sila obtains spiritual liberation. It is also said that whoever prays to Lord Nageshwar is freed of all mental poisons.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/magikindia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/nageshwar-2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"960\" height=\"720\" src=\"https:\/\/magikindia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/nageshwar-2.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-51686\" srcset=\"https:\/\/magikindia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/nageshwar-2.jpg 960w, https:\/\/magikindia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/nageshwar-2-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/magikindia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/nageshwar-2-720x540.jpg 720w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 960px) 100vw, 960px\" \/><\/a><figcaption>Lingam is facing South with Gomukham in the east<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>In this temple the lingam faces south and the <em>gomukham<\/em> faces East, and there is a story that explains why:&nbsp;<\/strong>A Shiva devotee called Naamdev was singing <em>bhajans<\/em> in front of the lingam one day. The other worshippers asked him to sit to one side so as not to block their view of the lingam. Naamdev asked them to show him a place where Shiva was not present so that he could sit there. The worshippers were angry and dragged him to the south end of the temple. To their astonishment, the lingam moved to face south.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignnone\"><a
