It is the home of &#8220;the Lord of the sound <em>Om<\/em>&#8220;, one of the 12 <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/magikindia.com\/jyotir-lingam-pilgrimage\/\"><strong>Jyotir Lingams<\/strong><\/a><strong> or &#8220;lingams of light&#8221;. At Omkareshwar the river Narmada divides into two channels around an island called Shivapuri. Legend has it that the Narmada was the sweat that flowed from Shiva&#8217;s body when he danced his cosmic dance, the Tandhava.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/magikindia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/omkareshwar-jyotir-lingam.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\" src=\"https:\/\/magikindia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/omkareshwar-jyotir-lingam.jpg\" alt=\"Omkareshwar\" class=\"wp-image-51868\" srcset=\"https:\/\/magikindia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/omkareshwar-jyotir-lingam.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/magikindia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/omkareshwar-jyotir-lingam-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/magikindia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/omkareshwar-jyotir-lingam-720x540.jpg 720w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/a><figcaption>Omkareshwar Jyotir Lingam<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>There are two important <a href=\"https:\/\/magikindia.com\/shivalingam\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Shiva Lingams<\/a> in the town, Omkareshwar and Mamaleshwar.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Omkareshwar (&#8220;Lord of the sound <em>Om<\/em>&#8220;) is the main temple and houses the <a href=\"https:\/\/magikindia.com\/jyotir-lingam-pilgrimage\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jyotir Lingam.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>The Mamaleshwar or Amareshwar lingam (&#8220;immortal Lord&#8221; lingam)<\/strong> and the temple that houses it are on the south bank of the Narmada. The temple dates from the 11th century. Shiva was satisfied and granted his wish. He allowed Mount Vindhya to grow, but made him promise not to cause any trouble.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After that the gods and sages asked Shiva to stay in the town. He agreed to do so and split the lingam in two. These are Banalingas or Narmada Lingams found in the bed of the river Narmada. <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They are Swayambhu Lingams (self-manifested lingams) because they have been shaped naturally by the river itself. Banalingas are only found in the Narmada. Hindus regard them as very sacred because of their lingam shape. The elements that made up the meteorite became incorporated in the rock formations through which the river flowed.
