There stands one of the 12 Jyotir Lingams or &#8220;Lingams of light&#8221;. It is believed to be the last Jyotir Lingam, where the pilgrimage round the Jyotir Lingams ends.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<p>Grishneshwar literally means &#8216;<strong>lord of compassion&#8217;,<\/strong> this lord is Shiva, the Hindu god of the destruction of illusion, represented here by a <strong>Jyotir-lingam <\/strong>or<strong> lingam of light.<\/strong> The temple is an important pilgrimage site in the Shivaite tradition, which considers it the last or the twelfth Jyotir-lingam.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><a href=\"https:\/\/magikindia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/Grishneshwar-temple.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1282\" height=\"824\" src=\"https:\/\/magikindia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/Grishneshwar-temple.jpg\" alt=\"Grishneshwar\" class=\"wp-image-53885\" srcset=\"https:\/\/magikindia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/Grishneshwar-temple.jpg 1282w, https:\/\/magikindia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/Grishneshwar-temple-300x193.jpg 300w, https:\/\/magikindia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/Grishneshwar-temple-1024x658.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/magikindia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/Grishneshwar-temple-1245x800.jpg 1245w, https:\/\/magikindia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/Grishneshwar-temple-720x463.jpg 720w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1282px) 100vw, 1282px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Legend has it that Bhosale (the chief of the village of Verul) would have found a treasure hidden in a snake pit by the grace of Lord Grishneshwar. It is said that he spent this money to renovate the temple.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Historically, the structure of the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/magikindia.com\/culture-india__trashed\/architecture-of-india\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Dravidian style<\/a><\/strong> temple was destroyed by the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/magikindia.com\/culture-india__trashed\/history-of-india\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Delhi Sultanate<\/a> <\/strong>in the 13th and 14th century. The temple then underwent several phases of reconstruction followed by further destruction during the Mughal-Maratha conflict. Despite her grief, Kusuma did not interrupt her daily ritual and when she immersed the Shiva Lingam in the lake her son was miraculously brought back to life.
