A listed Unesco World Heritage site, it features thousands of vestiges spread over an area of more than 4000ha. Hampi is a treasure chest lost in a desert of rocks lovingly polished by time.<\/strong><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>For the most part Hampi consists of vestiges of the capital of the 14th-16th-century Vijayanagara empire, the last great Hindu kingdom founded by Telegu princes in 1336.<\/p>\n<p>At its peak, the city had a population of over a million, making it a very large town for its time. Exploring the wonders of the site one can easily imagine Hampi&#8217;s original wealth and importance. This event has been reiterated as the \u201cNada Utsava \u201c by the Government of Karnataka. This festival is attributes to the mega cultural extravaganza. It is located in the zenana (the harem). It has only recently been discovered and excavated, having been completely buried until then.[\/section]<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h4><strong>Queen&#8217;s bath &#8211; Royal City***<\/strong><\/h4>\n<hr \/>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/magikindia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/queen-bath-hampi.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-50703 size-full\" title=\"Hampi\" src=\"https:\/\/magikindia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/queen-bath-hampi.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1067\" height=\"800\" srcset=\"https:\/\/magikindia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/queen-bath-hampi.jpg 1067w, https:\/\/magikindia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/queen-bath-hampi-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/magikindia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/queen-bath-hampi-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/magikindia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/queen-bath-hampi-720x540.jpg 720w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1067px) 100vw, 1067px\" \/><\/a><br \/><strong>From the fa\u00e7ade of this building you would not guess how refined and sophisticated the interior is.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The rectangular bathing tank is surrounded by a veranda and balconies, in <a href=\"https:\/\/magikindia.com\/culture-india\/architecture-of-india\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Indo-Islamic style.<\/a> It was probably used by the queens of the harem.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h4><strong>Sasivekalu Ganesha Temple**<\/strong><\/h4>\n<hr \/>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/magikindia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/hampi-2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-50705 size-full\" title=\"Hampi\" src=\"https:\/\/magikindia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/hampi-2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1067\" height=\"800\" srcset=\"https:\/\/magikindia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/hampi-2.jpg 1067w, https:\/\/magikindia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/hampi-2-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/magikindia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/hampi-2-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/magikindia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/hampi-2-720x540.jpg 720w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1067px) 100vw, 1067px\" \/><\/a><br \/><strong><em>Sasivekalu<\/em> means &#8220;mustard seed&#8221;, and that&#8217;s the name affectionately given to this 2.4m tall monolithic Ganesha statue,<\/strong> perhaps because of the god&#8217;s round belly.<\/p>\n<p>In Hindu mythology, <a href=\"https:\/\/magikindia.com\/ganesha-chaturthi-india\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Lord Ganesha<\/a> is known for his gluttony. It is said that one day he ate so much that his belly almost burst; so he caught a snake and tied it round his middle by way of a support belt.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h4><strong>Kadalekalu Ganesha Temple***<\/strong><\/h4>\n<hr \/>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/magikindia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/ganesha-hampi.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1000\" height=\"766\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-50713\" src=\"https:\/\/magikindia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/ganesha-hampi.jpg\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"https:\/\/magikindia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/ganesha-hampi.jpg 1000w, https:\/\/magikindia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/ganesha-hampi-300x230.jpg 300w, https:\/\/magikindia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/ganesha-hampi-720x552.jpg 720w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" \/><\/a><br \/><strong>Kadalekalu is another monolithic statue of Ganesha.\u00a0<\/strong>It is 4.5m tall and stands in a sanctuary whose tall columns are sculpted with mythological themes.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h4><strong>Hemakuta Hill***<\/strong><\/h4>\n<hr \/>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/magikindia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/colline-hampi.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1067\" height=\"800\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-50699\" src=\"https:\/\/magikindia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/colline-hampi.jpg\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"https:\/\/magikindia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/colline-hampi.jpg 1067w, https:\/\/magikindia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/colline-hampi-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/magikindia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/colline-hampi-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/magikindia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/colline-hampi-720x540.jpg 720w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1067px) 100vw, 1067px\" \/><\/a><br \/><strong>This hill near the Virupaksha temple is dotted with 30 small sanctuaries, arcades and pavilions.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The entire hill was once fortified with thick stone walls whose vestiges can still be seen.<\/p>\n<p><strong>According to legend, it was on Hemakuta hill that Lord Shiva paid penance before marrying Pampa, a goddess associated with the river Tungabhadra.<\/strong> Shiva was so impressed by her devotion to him that he agreed to marry her. Thereupon a rain of gold fell on the hill. (<em>Hema<\/em> is &#8220;gold&#8221; in Sanskrit).<\/p>\n<p>That is why some of the temples on the hill are dedicated to Shiva. At that time the temple was a small one; the Vijayanagar kings enlarged it. Narasimha is seated on a giant coiled snake called Shesha. The snake&#8217;s seven heads form a hood over Narasimha&#8217;s head.
