It was here, at Kappad Beach, that Vasco Da Gama landed with 170 men in 1498.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Kozhikode has long been a town of travellers and traders. Arab, Phoenician and Chinese traders operated here from the 7th century. During the Middle Ages Calicut was known as the &#8220;spice city&#8221; as it was the main supplier of Eastern spices. The arrival of the Portuguese explorer Vasco Da Gama in 1498 opened the direct trade route between Europe and Malabar (today&#8217;s <a rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/magikindia.com\/south-india\/kerala\/\" target=\"_blank\">Kerala<\/a>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/magikindia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/Vasco_da_Gama-calicut.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1200\" height=\"790\" src=\"https:\/\/magikindia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/Vasco_da_Gama-calicut.jpg\" alt=\"Kozhikode\" class=\"wp-image-51433\" srcset=\"https:\/\/magikindia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/Vasco_da_Gama-calicut.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/magikindia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/Vasco_da_Gama-calicut-300x198.jpg 300w, https:\/\/magikindia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/Vasco_da_Gama-calicut-1024x674.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/magikindia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/Vasco_da_Gama-calicut-720x474.jpg 720w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px\" \/><\/a><figcaption>Vasco De Gama docks on the banks of Calicut | Image: National Library of Portugal<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Kozhikode today is still a flourishing centre for national and international trade in commodities such as pepper, coconut, coffee and rubber, all mainly produced in the neighbouring districts of <a href=\"https:\/\/magikindia.com\/south-india\/kerala\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Wayanad<\/a>, Malappuram and Kannur.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Zamorins<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/magikindia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/zamorins.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1200\" height=\"944\" src=\"https:\/\/magikindia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/zamorins.jpg\" alt=\"Kozhikode\" class=\"wp-image-51437\" srcset=\"https:\/\/magikindia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/zamorins.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/magikindia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/zamorins-300x236.jpg 300w, https:\/\/magikindia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/zamorins-1024x806.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/magikindia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/zamorins-1017x800.jpg 1017w, https:\/\/magikindia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/zamorins-720x566.jpg 720w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px\" \/><\/a><figcaption>Vasco De Gama introducing himself before the Zamorins<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>The word Zamorin or Samorin is a Portuguese corruption of the word <em>samudrathiri <\/em>or <em>samutiri raja<\/em>, &#8220;great lord of the sea&#8221;,<\/strong> the title of the powerful rajas who ruled Kozhikode (Calicut) when Vasco da Gama landed on the coast of Malabar (modern-day Kerala).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Zamorins&#8217; power relied on the <em>moplah<\/em> traders, who were Muslims of Arab origin, and a large fleet commanded by their admirals, the Kunjali.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">During the 15th century the Zamorins had extended their rule to several other kingdoms including Kochi (Cochin).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">And now, let&#8217;s visit Kozhikode!<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Mananchira Square*<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"900\" height=\"594\" src=\"https:\/\/magikindia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/Mananchira-Square.jpg\" alt=\"Kozhikode\" class=\"wp-image-51480\" srcset=\"https:\/\/magikindia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/Mananchira-Square.jpg 900w, https:\/\/magikindia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/Mananchira-Square-300x198.jpg 300w, https:\/\/magikindia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/Mananchira-Square-720x475.jpg 720w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 900px) 100vw, 900px\" \/><figcaption>Garden of the Mananchira square <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Mananchira Square is a park in the centre of town. It is named after the artificial lake Mananchira, created by order of the Zamorin Manadevan.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">During the Zamorin (or Samoothiripad) period, Kozhikode was the capital of Malabar (a.k.a. Kerala); the town was fortified and boasted an imperial palace located where the park is today. The palace was destroyed by Tipu Sultan&#8217;s army in the mid-18th century.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Mishkal Mosque***<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>This lovely emerald green mosque in Kuttichira, the Muslim quarter of Kozhikode, is of considerable cultural, historic and architectural importance. <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" src=\"https:\/\/magikindia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/calicut-2-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"Kozhikode\" class=\"wp-image-51457\" srcset=\"https:\/\/magikindia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/calicut-2-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/magikindia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/calicut-2-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/magikindia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/calicut-2-1200x800.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/magikindia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/calicut-2-720x480.jpg 720w, https:\/\/magikindia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/calicut-2.jpg 1234w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It was built in the 14the century by Nakhooda Mishkal, a wealthy Arab merchant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Originally the mosque had seven storeys but after a Portuguese attack in 1510 it was reduced to four.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>The mosque has no dome and no minarets; its style is more Keralan than Arab.<\/strong> It features 50 doors and 24 carved pillars that support the structure. A door with inscription in Malayalam gives an idea of the religious tolerance that prevailed in the 13th century. It is said that the land for the building of the mosque was a gift from the Zamorin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>The double-tiered roof has an ornamental gable. Every day five different religious ceremonies are held at the temple&#8217;s Shiva-lingam.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Unfortunately, as with many important temples in Kerala, it is not open to non-Hindus, and even Hindus must wear approved dress: saris for women and dhotis for men.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Kozhikode beach**<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"810\" height=\"540\" src=\"https:\/\/magikindia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/Kozhikode-Beach.jpg\" alt=\"Kozhikode\" class=\"wp-image-51468\" srcset=\"https:\/\/magikindia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/Kozhikode-Beach.jpg 810w, https:\/\/magikindia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/Kozhikode-Beach-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/magikindia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/Kozhikode-Beach-720x480.jpg 720w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 810px) 100vw, 810px\" \/><figcaption> Koszhikode beach<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Kozhikode beach is a favourite spot for sunset watchers and the ideal place for seafood lovers<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">All along the promenade are stalls selling <em>kallumekaya<\/em> (mussels) and other seafoods.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the evening brightly lit stands selling drinks and pickles (<em>achaar<\/em>) are dotted like candles along the beach, creating a very special atmosphere. Few tourists go there and they are buzzing with authentic scenes and enriching encounters.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This market near the Kozhikode seafront is no exception.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The goods traded here include every imaginable kind of rice and flour and of course India&#8217;s omnipresent spices.
