It has been called the &#8220;Manchester of the South&#8221; because of its textiles industry. Its main assets are its position close to <a href=\"https:\/\/magikindia.com\/south-india\/kerala\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Kerala <\/a>and the hill stations of Nilgiri mountains. Aficionados of Hindu temples won&#8217;t be disappointed either.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Marudhamalai <\/strong>Temple (15km)<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Marudhamalai is one of the must-go places for visitors to Coimbatore, not only for its temple to the Hindu god Muruga but also for its luxuriant vegetation and sweeping view of the city.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><a href=\"https:\/\/magikindia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/coimbatore-4.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1067\" height=\"800\" src=\"https:\/\/magikindia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/coimbatore-4.jpg\" alt=\"Coimbatore\" class=\"wp-image-50909\" srcset=\"https:\/\/magikindia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/coimbatore-4.jpg 1067w, https:\/\/magikindia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/coimbatore-4-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/magikindia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/coimbatore-4-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/magikindia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/coimbatore-4-720x540.jpg 720w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1067px) 100vw, 1067px\" \/><\/a><figcaption>Marudhamalai Temple <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Marudhamalai temple is named after the hill on which it stands: Marudha Malai, which means &#8220;hill of vegetation&#8221; or &#8220;medicine hill&#8221;. Many medicinal herbs used in Ayurvedic medicine grow there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Marudhamalai temple is very important for worshippers of Muruga<\/strong>. In order of importance it ranks just below the <a href=\"https:\/\/magikindia.com\/palani-tamil-nadu\/\">Arupadai Veedu<\/a>, the six most sacred Muruga temples. The idol in the temple represents a particular form of Muruga called Dhandayudhapani. It is dedicated to Shiva under the name of Patteeswarar, represented in the form of a Swayambu Lingam (self-manifested<a href=\"https:\/\/magikindia.com\/shivalingam\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> lingam<\/a>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Shiva presides with his consort Pachainayaki (Parvati). The temple boasts a unique collection of stone sculptures of deities, protected by rather ugly grilles. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" installed in Patteswarar temple in Perur, but the axel of the cart taking it from <a href=\"https:\/\/magikindia.com\/madurai-tamil-nadu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Madurai <\/a>to Perur broke and the statue stayed here.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here <a rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/magikindia.com\/ganesha-chaturthi-india\/\" target=\"_blank\">Ganesha<\/a> is Thirumoorthy hills are a great place to stop on the way between <a rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/magikindia.com\/palani-tamil-nadu\/\" target=\"_blank\">Palani<\/a> and It has been excavated from the rock and has idols of the Trimurti (Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva) in the same sanctuary.
