Like most Muruga temples it stands on a hilltop, 100km southeast of <a href=\"https:\/\/magikindia.com\/coimbatore-tamil-nadu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Coimbatore<\/a> and it is buzzling with pilgrims dressed in yellow and green exclaiming &#8216;Haro Hara&#8217; and dancing until they fall into a trance&#8230;<\/strong><!--more--><\/p>\n<h3>Arupadai Veedu : the 6 sacred abodes of Lord Muruga<\/h3>\n<hr \/>\n<div id=\"attachment_50564\" style=\"width: 1153px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/magikindia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/murugan.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-50564\" class=\"wp-image-50564 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/magikindia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/murugan.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1143\" height=\"853\" srcset=\"https:\/\/magikindia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/murugan.jpg 1143w, https:\/\/magikindia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/murugan-300x224.jpg 300w, https:\/\/magikindia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/murugan-1024x764.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/magikindia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/murugan-1072x800.jpg 1072w, https:\/\/magikindia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/murugan-720x537.jpg 720w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1143px) 100vw, 1143px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-50564\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Statue of Muruga, Sri Premananda Ashram<\/p><\/div>\n<p><strong>Tamil Nadu has a considerable number of temples dedicated to Muruga but the A<em>arupadai Veedu<\/em> are the most sacred,<\/strong> for legend has it they are built on the sites of six battles in which Muruga fought against demons.<\/p>\n<p>The six sites are Thiruparamkundram, Thiruchendur, Palani-Thiruavinangkudi, Swamimalai, Thiruthani and Pazhamudhircholai. Although it is not on this list, <a href=\"https:\/\/magikindia.com\/coimbatore-tamil-nadu\/\">Marudhamalai<\/a> Temple in Coimbatore is also considered an <em>aarupadai veedu<\/em> by some.<\/p>\n<p>The legends associated with these six temples derive from the sacred Purana texts and local mythology.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>The Legend of Palani<\/h3>\n<hr \/>\n<p><strong>As Shiva and Parvati sat on the summit of Mount Kailash one day, Lord Narada came to visit and gave them a celestial fruit (<em>pazham<\/em>) of wisdom and knowledge.<\/strong><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_50537\" style=\"width: 811px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/magikindia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/murugan-palani.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-50537\" class=\"wp-image-50537 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/magikindia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/murugan-palani.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"801\" height=\"793\" srcset=\"https:\/\/magikindia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/murugan-palani.jpg 801w, https:\/\/magikindia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/murugan-palani-300x297.jpg 300w, https:\/\/magikindia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/murugan-palani-720x713.jpg 720w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 801px) 100vw, 801px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-50537\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Ganesha walking around his parents while Muruga set off for a journey<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The fruit could not be shared, so Shiva decided to set a challenge for his two sons, Ganapati (the Tamil name for Ganesha) and Muruga, and give the fruit to whoever won the contest. He told them to go round the world, and promised the fruit to whichever returned first.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Muruga set off on his peacock (his divine vehicle) and journeyed right round the world. Ganapati simply walked around his parents, and as Shiva and Parvati represent the universe, he won the fruit.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>When Muruga returned he was so furious that he renounced the world and retreated to a hilltop. Shiva and Parvati tried to comfort him, saying: &#8220;Muruga, you yourself are a divine fruit, the fruit of all wisdom and all knowledge, so why would you need this fruit?&#8221; In Tamil, <em>pazham nee<\/em> means &#8220;you are the fruit&#8221;, so the place came to be known as Pazhani, which became Palani. However, some say the name derives from <em>pazhanam<\/em> meaning &#8220;paddy fields&#8221;.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Kavadi<\/h3>\n<hr \/>\n<div id=\"attachment_50546\" style=\"width: 778px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/magikindia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/kavadi-2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-50546\" class=\"wp-image-50546 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/magikindia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/kavadi-2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"768\" height=\"567\" srcset=\"https:\/\/magikindia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/kavadi-2.jpg 768w, https:\/\/magikindia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/kavadi-2-300x221.jpg 300w, https:\/\/magikindia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/kavadi-2-720x532.jpg 720w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 768px) 100vw, 768px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-50546\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Kavadi<\/p><\/div>\n<p><strong>A typical feature of festivals and pilgrimages dedicated to Muruga is the <em>kavadi<\/em>, generally a wooden yoke carried on the shoulders.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>It is decorated with flowers, peacock feathers and suchlike and usually has bags of offerings for Lord Muruga hung on each end. A <em>kavadi<\/em> can weigh up to 30kg.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The <em>kavadi<\/em> tradition derives from Hindu mythology, the bags carried symbolising two hills.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Legend says that Lord Shiva on Mount Kailash instructed the sage Agastya to move two hills (Shivagiri and Shaktigiri) to southern India. The sage asked his disciple Idumban to help him, so Idumban hung one hill on each end of his yoke and set off. Muruga refused and a fight ensued in which Idumban was defeated. Realising that he had fought Lord Muruga, Idumban begged forgiveness and asked the young god to grant him two wishes: first, that whoever visited the temple at Palani bearing a <em>kavadi<\/em> on his shoulders should be blessed; second, that he, Idumban, be granted the honour of guarding the hill. As a result, half-way up the hill there is a shrine to Idumban, where pilgrims make offerings before visiting the temple and its Muruga statue.<\/p>\n<p>Ever since, pilgrims have come to Palani bearing a <em>kavadi<\/em> with their offerings, a custom that has now spread to Muruga temples all over the world.<\/p>\n<h4>[Video of pilgrims procession in Palani temple]<\/h4>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/iU4Wppf_iDs\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Kavadi<\/em> pilgrims must respect certain rules:<\/strong> to abstain from non-vegetarian food, alcohol and other addictive substances, to take a vow of abstinence and to journey to Palani on foot. This makes for some impressive sights.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The <em>kavadi<\/em>&#8216;s symbolism.<\/strong> The word kava means &#8220;saffron&#8221; and <em>adi <\/em>means &#8220;there&#8221;. The yoke symbolises humility in life and faith in the divine. A <em>kavadi<\/em> pilgrim must live simply and humbly and should afterwards strive to live their whole life in that way.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Haro Hara!<\/h3>\n<hr \/>\n<p><strong>In temples dedicated to Lord Muruga in Tamil Nadu, we can hear the faithful exclaiming &#8220;Haro Hara!&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Haro Hara! is a shortened form of the phrase &#8216;Ara Haro Hara&#8217;. During Thirunjana Sambandar&#8217;s journeys, the bearers of his palaquin and followers had the habit of chanting meaningless phrases &#8211; like &#8216;yeleloh yeleloh&#8217;, as a form of stress relief.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Thirunjana Sambandar taught them to replace these with the meaningful &#8221;Ara Haro Hara&#8217;.<\/strong> Over time, the use of &#8216;Ara Haro Hara&#8217; faded among the &#8216;Saivaites&#8217; but lived on with the &#8216;Kaumaras&#8217; (Muruga Devotees). It was further shortened to the present &#8216;Haro Hara&#8217;.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Palani idol<\/h3>\n<hr \/>\n<p><strong>The statue of Muruga in the Palani temple is called Dandayudhapani Swami, meaning &#8220;he who holds a staff in his hand&#8221;.<\/strong><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_50534\" style=\"width: 845px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/magikindia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/palani-muruga.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-50534\" class=\"wp-image-50534 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/magikindia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/palani-muruga.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"835\" height=\"563\" srcset=\"https:\/\/magikindia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/palani-muruga.jpg 835w, https:\/\/magikindia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/palani-muruga-300x202.jpg 300w, https:\/\/magikindia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/palani-muruga-720x485.jpg 720w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 835px) 100vw, 835px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-50534\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Dandayudhapani Swami<\/p><\/div>\n<p>According to legend, the statue was made by a <em>siddha*<\/em> named Bogar from a <em>navapashanam<\/em>, a mixture of nine poisons (<em>veeram<\/em>, <em>pooram<\/em>, <em>rasam<\/em>, <em>jathilingam<\/em>, <em>kandagam<\/em>, <em>gauri pasanam<\/em>, <em>vellai pasanam<\/em>, <em>mridharsingh<\/em> and <em>silasat<\/em>) which, blended in the right proportions, produce a master medicine or universal panacea. When <em>abhishekam <\/em>(anointment of the deity) is performed, whatever is poured over the statue becomes impregnated with these healing properties.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The statue, standing on a stone plinth, takes the form of a young monk, shaven-headed and devoid of all finery, wearing only a loincloth and holding a pilgrim&#8217;s staff.<\/strong> He has disproportionately large ears to show that he listens attentively to every prayer from his many followers. This is the only statue of Muruga of its kind in India.<\/p>\n<p>*<em> A <\/em>siddha <em>is an &#8220;accomplished one&#8221;, meaning one who has attained enlightenment by practising meditation and yoga.
