The town is best known for the huge temple dedicated to Meenakshi, a masterpiece of Dravidian art and an important spiritual centre. It is dedicated to the goddess Meenakshi, one of the forms of Parvati. <em>Meenakshi<\/em> means &#8220;<strong>fish&#8217;s eye&#8221;,<\/strong> from <em>meena<\/em>, &#8220;fish&#8221;, and <em>aksi<\/em>, &#8220;eye&#8221;. In this old pillared hall boasting some antic statues you&#8217;ll find stalls selling all kinds of things from books to textiles and soft furnishings, and a host of tailors&#8217; stalls. This is done to take the Lord to Madurai for attending the wedding rituals. The festival stretches on for about 10 days and the participation of the devotees is unmatched.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The origin of the festival<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Legend has it that King Pandyan of Madurai, Malayadwaja, and his wife Kanchanmala have been trying for years to conceive a child but in vain.<\/strong> In an attempt to father an heir, Malaydwaja performed many yagams (fire rituals). Finally, during one of these rituals, a three-year-old girl emerged from the flames and sat on Kanchanmala&#8217;s lap. But what was not their surprise when they saw that this little girl had three breasts. But suddenly, he heard a voice telling him to name the girl <strong>&#8220;Tatatakai&#8221;<\/strong> and raise her as if she were a boy. He named the little girl Tatatakai and taught her the art of war. After Malayadwaja&#8217;s death, Tatatakai ascended the throne. She was a benefactor and soothsayer queen known as <strong>&#8220;Meenakshi&#8221;, the one with the eyes in the shape of a fish.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Meenakshi was above all a warrior queen and she launched several successful military campaigns throughout India. After many victories on earth, <strong>Meenakshi decided to attack the heavens, and she set off with her armies to Mount Kailash, the residence of Lord Shiva<\/strong>. She defeated all of Shiva&#8217;s soldiers and generals. Seeing this, Shiva himself came to meet her and see how he could defeat the fearless queen.
