Located 65km from Madras on the banks of the river Vegavathy, Kanchipuram is known as the City of Gold or the City of a Thousand Temples. In those days it was renowned as a <em>ghatikasthanam<\/em> \u2013 a place of learning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Although the town may at one time have boasted thousands of temples, today there are rather fewer than a hundred.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The town is divided into two main parts, Shiva-Kanchi to the north and Vishnu-Kanchi to the east. The goddess is seated in the yogic lotus posture or Padmasana, which symbolises peace and prosperity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Kamakshi is also one of the <a href=\"https:\/\/magikindia.com\/shakti-peetha-pilgrimage\/\">51 Shakti Peethas<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignnone\"><a
