It symbolises the spiritual victory of light over darkness and of knowledge over ignorance.The name Diwali derives from the Sanskrit <em>dipavali<\/em>. <em>Dipa<\/em> means &#8216;lamp&#8217; or &#8216;light&#8217; and <em>avali<\/em> means &#8216;series&#8217; or &#8216;lines&#8217;. So &#8216;<em>diwali<\/em>&#8216; means lines of lights. dhan means &#8220;wealth&#8221;, teras is the 13th day<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is the day for celebrating Lakshmi, goddess of prosperity. It is considered that Goddess Lakshmi is coming home in the form of new things at this day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the evening, an oil lamp dedicated to the god of death Yamraj is lit outside the house to ward off any untimely death of family members. But Naraka had a boon that he would face death only at the hands of his mother Bhudevi. So, Krishna asks his wife&nbsp;Sathyabhama, the reincarnation of Bhudevi, to be his charioteer in the battle with Naraka.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When Krishna fell unconscious after being hit by an arrow of Naraka, Sathyabhama takes the bow and aims the arrow at Naraka, killing him instantly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It is said Lord Krishna had an oil bath to rid himself off the blood spattered on his body when Naraka was killed.
