It falls at the full moon (<em>purnami<\/em>) between mid-November and mid-December \u2013the month of Kartikai in the Tamil calendar, when the moon is in conjunction with the constellation Kritika, the Pleiades.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Kartikai <strong>and Lord Murugan<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The festival is linked to the story of the birth of Lord Murugan<\/strong>. There are various versions of the story, too. On this, Shiva&#8217;s head split into six and a spark of fire sprang from the third eye of each head.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Shiva asked the wind god Vayu and the fire god Agni to carry the six sparks to the river Ganga,<\/strong> which in turn carried them to Lake Saravana. There the six sparks became six fine babies cradled in red lotuses. The babies were raised by six celestial nymphs of the Pleiades, the Kritikas. The main statue, Lord Annamalai, is decorated with the sacred diamond crown and golden shield.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/magikindia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/kartikai-deepam-arunachala.jpg\" alt=\"This image has an empty alt attribute; its file name is kartikai-deepam-arunachala.jpg\"\/><figcaption>The big fire at the top of Arunachala hill<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>When the night comes, the temple is&nbsp;aglow with thousands of earthen oil lamps.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 1em;\">A special container is then lifted to the peak of the hill; it is filled with&nbsp;1000&nbsp;litres of ghee (clarified butter) and camphor. When the full moon appears, the&nbsp;<\/span>Mahadeepam (the big fire) is lit ; it can be seen over a distance of more than 30 km.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Devotees are then set to perform
