Under the name of <em>Makara Sankranti<\/em> it marks the sun&#8217;s transition from <em>Dhanur Rasi<\/em> (Sagittarius) to <em>Makara Rasi<\/em> (Capricorn).<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There are 12 <em>sankranti<\/em> or transitions in the year, one for each month. <em>Makar Sankranti <\/em>is the start of Uttarayana, the six months of the sun&#8217;s southward progression.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In Hinduism, Uttarayana is considered propitious, unlike Dakshinaayana, when the sun is moving southward. Indra was so furious that he sent heavy downpours of rain to flood the land. To protect people, Lord Krishna lifted Mount Govardhan on his little finger and held it aloft over the inhabitants. The rain continued for three days, until Indra realised he was wrong and acknowledged the divine power of Krishna. For the savoury version, see the recipe below.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-background wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"background-color:#e6e8e9\"><strong>Symbolically, pongal (the dish) combines the five elements or &#8216;Pancha Bhootha&#8217;.<\/strong> Rice represents the land or Bhoomi. It is cooked in water: Jalam. The fire it is cooked on represents Agni, sacred fire. Women design <strong>kolams,<\/strong> decorative geometric patterns drawn with rice flour, in front of their home. On that day, the pongal rice is set to boil and allowed to boil over.<\/strong> People also prepare snacks, visit each other and exchange good wishes. The preparation is very fast, about 30 minutes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Rice 1 Cup<\/strong><\/li><li><strong>Moong Dal 1\/4 Cup<\/strong><\/li><li><strong>Black Pepper Powder to taste<\/strong><\/li><li><strong>Cumin Powder 1 Tbsp<\/strong><\/li><li><strong>Ginger Paste 1 Tsp<\/strong><\/li><li><strong>Dry Dinger (Sukku) 1 Tbsp<\/strong><\/li><li><strong>Hing 1 Tsp<\/strong><\/li><li><strong>Cashew for garnishing<\/strong><\/li><li><strong>Ghee 2 Tbsp<\/strong><\/li><li><strong>Water 6 Cups<\/strong><\/li><li><strong>Salt to taste<\/strong><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Wash rice and dal together and drain nicely.<\/li><li>In the Rice cooker heat 1 tbsp ghee.<\/li><li>Add rice and dal. Fry till the ghee coats the mixture.<\/li><li>Add the rest of the ingredients, except Cashews.<\/li><li>Add water.
