It is probably the world&#8217;s biggest pilgrimage; gathering up to 100 million people in one place, to bathe in the sacred waters of four holy cities.The belief is that it opens the door to <em>moksha<\/em> (liberation) and spiritual awakening. But as the precise dates of each Kumbh Mela are determined by astrological methods and position of the planets, it may happen that some of the four cities, like Nashik and Ujjain, hold the Kumbh Mela together the same year. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\" src=\"https:\/\/magikindia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/margh-mela-allahabad-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"Kumbha \" class=\"wp-image-68394\" srcset=\"https:\/\/magikindia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/margh-mela-allahabad-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/magikindia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/margh-mela-allahabad-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/magikindia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/margh-mela-allahabad-1067x800.jpg 1067w, https:\/\/magikindia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/margh-mela-allahabad-720x540.jpg 720w, https:\/\/magikindia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/margh-mela-allahabad.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption><em>Allahabad during the Magh Mela<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Also, every six years Haridwar and Allahabad host an Ardha Kumbh Mela (half Kumbha Mela)<\/strong> and Allahabad also hosts the Magh Mela every year in January.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>The culmination of it all is the <em>Maha<\/em> (&#8220;great&#8221;) Kumbha Mela which takes place in Allahabad every 144 years, after 12 Purna Kumbha Melas.<\/strong> The last Maha Kumbha Mela was held in 2013 and is reckoned to have been attended by more than 100 million people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Check the dates of the different Melas on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kumbhmela.com\">official website<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The origin of <\/strong>the Khumba Mela<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The pilgrimage finds it origin in the Hindu myth of the Churning of the Ocean of Milk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Long ago, <em>devas<\/em> and <em>asuras<\/em> \u2013 gods and demons \u2013 were mortal beings. When they have finished their ablutions they smear their bodies with ash.
