However, the Dussehra Festival of the Bastar region in the state of <a href=\"https:\/\/magikindia.com\/north-india\/chhattisgarh\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Chhattisgarh<\/a> is totally unique: it is dedicated to Devi Danteshwari, the native goddess of the region, and draws its roots and its originality from the tribal culture.<\/strong><br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<p>Dussehra Bastar has another particularity, <strong>the festival lasts 75 days against 1 day normally<\/strong>. It begins at Amavasya, the dark moon of the month of Shravan, and ends on the thirteenth day of the brilliant moon of Ashwin&#8217;s month. Local tribes have integrated this deity along with their local deities called &#8216;<strong>Anga Deo&#8217;<\/strong> (see below). Danteshwari is highly respected by the tribes: according to a local legend, she saved the king of Bastar from several attackers by protecting him in a forest. Since that time the tribes have continued to pay tribute to her.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Origins of Dussehra<\/strong> in Bastar<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" src=\"https:\/\/magikindia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/maharaja-bastar-chhattisgarh-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-72078\" srcset=\"https:\/\/magikindia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/maharaja-bastar-chhattisgarh-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/magikindia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/maharaja-bastar-chhattisgarh-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/magikindia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/maharaja-bastar-chhattisgarh-1200x800.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/magikindia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/maharaja-bastar-chhattisgarh-720x480.jpg 720w, https:\/\/magikindia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/maharaja-bastar-chhattisgarh.jpg 1219w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption>The current Maharaja of Bastar<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Legend has it that the Bastar Dussehra tradition dates back to the <strong>Maharaja Kakatiya Purushottam Deo<\/strong> (descendant of the great <a href=\"https:\/\/magikindia.com\/culture-india\/history-of-india\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Chalukya dynasty<\/strong><\/a>); It is said that he walked one year in prosternation to reach&nbsp;<strong>Jagannath temple<\/strong> in <a href=\"https:\/\/magikindia.com\/puri-odisha\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Puri<\/strong><\/a> to honor Jagannath <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/magikindia.com\/krishna-jayanti\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">(Lord&nbsp;Krishna)<\/a>.<\/strong> <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Jagannath was pleased by the king&#8217;s penance and, as a reward, he offered him a 12-wheeled chariot for the return journey&nbsp;and he also gave him the name of &#8216;Rath Pati&#8217; (divine chariot driver). The two current chariots processing in the streets of Jagdalpur are supposed to be replicas of those two chariots given by Krishna to the king Kakatiya Purushottam Deo. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Originally a Hindu tradition, this festival then incorporated and assimilated the customs of local tribes. Anga Deo trance dance]<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/LIidahQkBFg\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Highlights<\/strong> of the festival <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p>Although the festival lasts 75 days, the last 10 days (corresponding to the common <a href=\"https:\/\/magikindia.com\/navaratri-india\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Navaratri<\/strong><\/a>) that end the festival are the most important and especially the last two days when the huge 8-wheeled chariot is pulled by hundreds of men.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here are the main steps (non-exhaustive list) of this unique festival.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Paat Jatra, the trunk ceremony<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p>Dussehra, in Bastar, begins with the ritual of <strong>Paat Jatra,<\/strong> the day of Hariyali Amavasya (&#8216;Amoos Teehaar&#8217; in the local language) in the month of Sharavana dedicated to the god Shiva (in July in our Gregorian calendar). <strong>Hariyali Amavasya<\/strong> is considered a very auspicious day and celebrates also the arrival of the monsoon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>During this ritual,<strong> a trunk of salt tree<\/strong> is cut in the forests of Bhilori and brought before the temple of the goddess Danteshwari. It is not only used as a timber but it is also a sacred tree in India. It is said that Buddha meditated in a forest of sal trees near <a href=\"https:\/\/magikindia.com\/footsteps-lord-buddha\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Kushinagar<\/strong> <\/a>at the time of his Parinirvana (his physical death) and that the flowers of this tree have fallen as a sign of respect completely covering his body. The Maharaja of Bastar arrives in procession to ask the goddess to bless the festival.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This blessing is made through a young girl who enters a trance on a swing made of branches and thorns. This penance aims to ensure the smooth running of the festival.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>NISHA JATRA<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p>Nisha Jatra is a ritual performed in the morning at Danteshwari Temple at Jagdalpur Palace.
