These are in Badrinath, <a href=\"https:\/\/magikindia.com\/dwarka-gujarat\/\" target=\"_blank\">Dwarka<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/magikindia.com\/puri-odisha\/\" target=\"_blank\">Puri<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/magikindia.com\/rameshwaram-tamil-nadu\/\" target=\"_blank\">Rameshwaram<\/a>.\u00a0Over time, another Char Dham pilgrimage circuit has developed, in Uttarakhand state in North India. It is known as Chota Char Dham, &#8216;the four small abodes&#8217; or &#8216;Himalayan Char Dham&#8217;.<\/strong><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Hindus believe that a pilgrimage or yatra around the Char Dham cities opens the way to moksha, liberation from the cycle of deaths and rebirths. They also think that every believer should try to visit each of these places at least once in their life.<\/p>\n<p>Most pilgrims start their Chota Char Dham pilgrimage at <a href=\"https:\/\/magikindia.com\/haridwar-uttarakhand\/\" target=\"_blank\">Haridwar<\/a>. Others set off from <a href=\"https:\/\/magikindia.com\/rishikesh-uttarakhand\/\" target=\"_blank\">Rishikesh<\/a>, or from Dehradun, capital of Uttarakhand. From there, the tradition is to visit Yamunotri, Gangotri, Kedarnath and Badrinath in that order.<\/p>\n<p>[box]<\/p>\n<h4>Before you start your yatra&#8230;<\/h4>\n<hr \/>\n<div id=\"attachment_41307\" style=\"width: 719px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/magikindia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/saddhu-char-dham.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-41307\" class=\"wp-image-41307 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/magikindia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/saddhu-char-dham.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"709\" height=\"473\" srcset=\"https:\/\/magikindia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/saddhu-char-dham.jpg 709w, https:\/\/magikindia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/saddhu-char-dham-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 709px) 100vw, 709px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-41307\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Saddhus on the Char Dham pilgrimage<\/p><\/div>\n<p><strong>BEST TIME TO GO<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The four pilgrimage destinations are accessible only for six months (May to October) throughout the year but I strongly advise you to avoid the rainy season (from July to septembre). So the best time to go is:\u00a0May to June and September to October.<\/p>\n<p><strong>PERMITS<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Kedarnath pilgrimage\u00a0requires a permit and a medical check-up (see below). Try to plan your trip in advance to avoid the queues and delays.<\/p>\n<p><strong>FOR LONESOME TRAVELERS<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>If you travel alone, I would suggest\u00a0you to hire a guide or to join a group during the treks. Mountains can be unpredictable.<\/p>\n<p><strong>PHYSICAL PREPARATION<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Although the treks for Yamunotri and Kedarnath pose no particular problem for sports practitioners, other people are\u00a0strongly recommended to undertake some physical training\u00a0before starting the pilgrimages.<\/p>\n<p><strong>TRANSPORTATION<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>If you have time, buses are available to and from the four destinations. Renting or\/and sharing a car is the best option. It allows you to stop and visit different places of interests on the way.<\/p>\n<p>[\/box]<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Yamunotri<\/h3>\n<hr \/>\n<h6><strong>Distance: 220km from Rishikesh\u00a0<\/strong><\/h6>\n<hr \/>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/magikindia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/yamunotri.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"709\" height=\"473\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-35322\" src=\"https:\/\/magikindia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/yamunotri.jpg\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"https:\/\/magikindia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/yamunotri.jpg 709w, https:\/\/magikindia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/yamunotri-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/magikindia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/yamunotri-600x400.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 709px) 100vw, 709px\" \/><\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Yamunotri &#8211; the first\u00a0\u2018dham\u2019 &#8211; 3300m up in the Garhwal Himalayas, marks the source of the Yamuna, one of seven India&#8217;s most holy rivers.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>To reach it you need to trek 13km. For those who can\u2019t trek, poneys and doli-bearers are available at\u00a0Janki Chatti where the yatra starts.<\/p>\n<p>Yamuna temple, on the left bank of the sacred river, was built by Pratap Shah, a 19th-century Maharaja of Tehri Garhwal. The idol is made of black marble. Pilgrims can enjoy those holy relaxing waters.<\/p>\n<p><strong>One of these hot spring is called\u00a0Surya Kund. The Dibya-Shila as it is called is worshipped by the devotees before entering the main temple of the goddess Yamuna.<\/p>\n<h4>On the way to Gangotri&#8230;<\/h4>\n<hr \/>\n<h5>Uttarkashi<\/h5>\n<p>Uttarkashi, is one of the most interesting stops on your way to Gangotri, mostly due to its ancient temples.<\/p>\n<p>Uttarkashi, means &#8216;Kashi of the north&#8217;. The name of the town reflects its similarity to the city of Kashi (Varanasi). Similar to<a href=\"https:\/\/magikindia.com\/varanasi-uttar-pradesh\/\" target=\"_blank\"> Varanasi,<\/a> town of Uttarkashi is situated on the Ganges, has a ghat called Manikarnika Ghat and has a temple dedicated to Shiva (Kashi Vishwanath Temple) in the center of the town.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_41289\" style=\"width: 719px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/magikindia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/uttarkashi.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-41289\" class=\"wp-image-41289 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/magikindia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/uttarkashi.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"709\" height=\"473\" srcset=\"https:\/\/magikindia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/uttarkashi.jpg 709w, https:\/\/magikindia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/uttarkashi-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 709px) 100vw, 709px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-41289\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Shakti temple and Shiva temple in the background<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Kashi Vishwanath Temple is the most famous temple in Uttarkashi. It is dedicated to Lord Shiva represented by a Shivalingam of 56 cm in height.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The present temple was built over the pre-existing ancient altar, in the year 1857 A.D. by the queen of Tehri Smt. Khaneti Devi in the traditional Himalayan temple architecture.<\/strong> The legend\u00a0has it that the sage Rishi Markandeya had so much love and devotion to lord Shiva that the lord himself protected the sage from Yama, the God of death, who came to take the sage\u2019s life at this very place where the temple is situated.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_41291\" style=\"width: 719px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/magikindia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/uttarkashsi-viswanath-temple.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-41291\" class=\"wp-image-41291 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/magikindia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/uttarkashsi-viswanath-temple.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"709\" height=\"477\" srcset=\"https:\/\/magikindia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/uttarkashsi-viswanath-temple.jpg 709w, https:\/\/magikindia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/uttarkashsi-viswanath-temple-300x202.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 709px) 100vw, 709px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-41291\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The ancient trident<\/p><\/div>\n<p><strong>Opposite to the Vishwanath temple is the intriging <a href=\"https:\/\/magikindia.com\/shakti-peetha-pilgrimage\/\" target=\"_blank\">Shakti<\/a> Temple<\/strong>. No trek is needed.\u00a0<\/strong><strong>According to Hindu legend, it was here that Goddess Ganga descended when Lord Shiva released the mighty river from the locks of his hair.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>India&#8217;s holiest river is called Bhagirathi at its source and Ganga (Ganges) after it reaches Devprayag, where it is joined by the Alaknanda river (see below).<\/p>\n<p><strong>The actual source of the river is at Gaumukh on the Gangotri glacier, 18km from the town.<\/strong> Gangotri temple was built by the Gurkha general Amar Singh Thapa in homage to Mother Ganges.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_41321\" style=\"width: 719px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/magikindia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/gangotri-arati.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-41321\" class=\"wp-image-41321 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/magikindia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/gangotri-arati.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"709\" height=\"473\" srcset=\"https:\/\/magikindia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/gangotri-arati.jpg 709w, https:\/\/magikindia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/gangotri-arati-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 709px) 100vw, 709px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-41321\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Arati to Ganga<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The evening arati (flame offering) \u00a0to Ganga river and in the Ganga temple are\u00a0worth seeing.<\/p>\n<p>Gangotri has\u00a0many accommodations but with basic facilities&#8230;don\u2019t expect hot water in your room \ud83d\ude09<\/p>\n<p>[box]<\/p>\n<h5>Trekking in the Gangotri National Park<\/h5>\n<hr \/>\n<p>From the town of Gangotri several scenic treks can be done. A\u00a0permit\u00a0is required from the\u00a0Forest Office Department, in\u00a0Uttarkashi or directly in Gangotri. In order to control the number of people travelling on this ecologically sensitive area, the Governement of India has introduced the permit system to allow only 150 people per day.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_41287\" style=\"width: 719px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/magikindia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/gaumukh-glacier.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-41287\" class=\"wp-image-41287 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/magikindia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/gaumukh-glacier.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"709\" height=\"473\" srcset=\"https:\/\/magikindia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/gaumukh-glacier.jpg 709w, https:\/\/magikindia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/gaumukh-glacier-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 709px) 100vw, 709px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-41287\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Gaumukh glacier<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The\u00a0Gaumukh glacier trek (the source of the Ganges) is the most famous and offers stunning views of Mount Shivling and the Bhagirathi group of mountains. It lies at 4255 m above the sea and can be reached after a18 km trek from Gangotri.<\/p>\n<p>For the advanced trekkers, the Tapovan trek is a must.<\/p>\n<p>[\/box]<\/p>\n<h4>On the way to\u00a0Kedarnath&#8230;<\/h4>\n<hr \/>\n<h5>Triyuginarayan Temple<\/h5>\n<p>At a distance of 10 km from Sonprayag, stands Triyuginarayan, an ancient Hindu temple\u00a0dedicated to Lord Vishnu.\u00a0It is believed to have been built by the saint Adi Shankaracharya.<\/p>\n<p><strong>This temple is famous because it is said, according to mythology, that this place is where\u00a0the celestial marriage of Lord Shiva and goddess Parvati took place<\/strong>.\u00a0Mythology states that Shiva proposed to Parvati at Guptakashi (on the road to Kedarnath) before they got married in the small Triyuginarayan village.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_41295\" style=\"width: 719px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/magikindia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/kedarnath-2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-41295\" class=\"wp-image-41295 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/magikindia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/kedarnath-2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"709\" height=\"473\" srcset=\"https:\/\/magikindia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/kedarnath-2.jpg 709w, https:\/\/magikindia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/kedarnath-2-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 709px) 100vw, 709px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-41295\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Triyuginarayan Temple<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The god Brahma was the priest of the wedding, thus a Brahma Shila (a rock) in front of the temple also marks the exact place of the wedding.<\/p>\n<p><strong>A special feature of this temple is a perpetual fire, that burns in the temple. The flame is believed to burn from the times of the divine marriage<\/strong>.\u00a0The\u00a0pilgrims who visit this temple consider the ashes from the burning fire as holy and carry it with them. It is also believed that ashes from this fire are supposed to promote conjugal bliss.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Kedarnath<\/h3>\n<hr \/>\n<h6><strong>Distance from Gangotri: 330km<\/strong><\/h6>\n<hr \/>\n<div id=\"attachment_35324\" style=\"width: 719px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-35324\" class=\"wp-image-35324 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/magikindia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/kedernath.jpg\" alt=\"kedarnath\" width=\"709\" height=\"473\" srcset=\"https:\/\/magikindia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/kedernath.jpg 709w, https:\/\/magikindia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/kedernath-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/magikindia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/kedernath-600x400.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 709px) 100vw, 709px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-35324\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Kedarnath temple<\/p><\/div>\n<h6><strong><br \/>\n<\/strong><\/h6>\n<p><strong>Kedarnath is situated about 3583 meters above the sea level near the Chorabari Glacier. It is the abode of one of revered\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/magikindia.com\/jyotir-lingam-pilgrimage\/\" target=\"_blank\">12 Jyotir lingams<\/a>,\u00a0symbol of Lord Shiva.\u00a0The temple is not directly accessible by road. It is reached by a though trek of 19km. For those who can\u2019t trek, poneys, doli-bearers and even helicopters are available.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>According to legend, the five Pandava brothers wanted to meet Shiva to ask him the absolution of their murders committed during the war against the Kauravas. Shiva decided to test them and went from town to town to finally arrive at Kedarnath in the form of a buffalo. Bhima, one of the Pandava brothers recognized him. Shiva decided then to sank into the ground, leaving only his hump on the surface.
