{"id":42217,"date":"2022-04-13T15:40:00","date_gmt":"2022-04-13T13:40:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/magikindia.com\/?p=42217\/"},"modified":"2022-04-14T08:12:01","modified_gmt":"2022-04-14T06:12:01","slug":"dharamshala-tibetan-refuge","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/magikindia.com\/en\/dharamshala-tibetan-refuge\/","title":{"rendered":"Dharamshala, a Tibetan haven in India"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>On 17th March 1959, Tenzin Gyatso, the current Dalai Lama fled Tibet following the Chinese invasion and took refuge in Dharamshala, <a href=\"https:\/\/magikindia.com\/north-india\/himachal-pradesh\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Himachal Pradesh<\/a>, where he established the Tibetan government in exile. McLeod Ganj or &#8216;Upper Dharamshala&#8217; located 10km above Dharamshala became the official residence of the Dalai Lama and the haven of thousands of Tibetans. Over the years, McLeod Ganj turned into one of the most attractive mountain resorts in India not only for its Buddhist culture but also for its relaxed ambience and the beauty of its mountainous landscapes.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<p>Long before becoming a refuge for Tibetan people and up to the<strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/magikindia.com\/culture-india\/history-of-india\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">British Empire<\/a><\/strong>, the region (Kangra) was ruled by the <a href=\"https:\/\/magikindia.com\/north-india\/rajasthan\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Rajput<\/strong><\/a> Katochs sovereigns, one of the oldest royal dynasties in the world. With the arrival of the British Raj emerging victorious from the second Anglo-Sikh War (1848-1849), the royal family of Katoch is reduced to a fief; Mcleod Ganj becomes the British summer capital, and the Kangra region one of the <a href=\"https:\/\/magikindia.com\/north-india\/punjab\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Punjab<\/strong><\/a> provinces run by the governors of Lahore.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After the massive earthquake of 1905, which killed thousands of people and almost destroyed Dharamshala, the British summer capital was moved to <a href=\"https:\/\/magikindia.com\/shimla\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Shimla<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>McLeod Ganj<\/strong> (upper Dharamshala)<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1219\" height=\"813\" src=\"https:\/\/magikindia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/dharamshala.jpg\" alt=\"Dharamshala\" class=\"wp-image-64902\" srcset=\"https:\/\/magikindia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/dharamshala.jpg 1219w, https:\/\/magikindia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/dharamshala-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/magikindia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/dharamshala-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/magikindia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/dharamshala-1200x800.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/magikindia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/dharamshala-720x480.jpg 720w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1219px) 100vw, 1219px\" \/><figcaption>Mcleod Ganj<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>McLeod Ganj derives its name from the lieutenant-governor of <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/magikindia.com\/north-india\/punjab\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Punjab<\/a><\/strong>, Sir Donald Friell McLeod. To find a bit of tranquility, start your day early in the morning and follow the Buddhist pilgrims on&nbsp;the Temple Road who walk to the Dalai Lama&#8217;s residence while chanting their rosaries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Dalai Lama Temple Complex<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p>McLeod Ganj has no ancient monuments, the main attraction there is the residence of the Dalai Lama called &#8216;Tsug La Khang\u2019, that consists of a monastery (Namgyal Monastery), several temples and a museum.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\" src=\"https:\/\/magikindia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/dharamshala-dalai-lama-1-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"Dharamshala\" class=\"wp-image-64909\" srcset=\"https:\/\/magikindia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/dharamshala-dalai-lama-1-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/magikindia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/dharamshala-dalai-lama-1-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/magikindia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/dharamshala-dalai-lama-1-1067x800.jpg 1067w, https:\/\/magikindia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/dharamshala-dalai-lama-1-720x540.jpg 720w, https:\/\/magikindia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/dharamshala-dalai-lama-1.jpg 1219w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption>The main temple where the Dalai Lama gives his speeches<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>While entering the complex, echoes of voices arouse our curiosity: it is the famous verbal jousting of the tibetan monks debating about <a href=\"https:\/\/magikindia.com\/culture-india\/spirituality\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Buddhist philosophy<\/strong><\/a> ; it is punctuated by hand-claps marking the rhythm of the discussion and the determination of the debaters. Inaugurated on April 30, 2000 by the Dalai Lama, the Tibetan Museum aims to preserve the Tibetan identity and to make known and to spread Tibetan culture. It includes a collection of more than 30,000 photographies on the past and contemporary history of Tibet. Avoid at all costs the insipid momos sold in the streets and,&nbsp;instead, go to the restaurant &#8216;Tibet Kitchen&#8217; on Jogiwara Road ; There are always several Tibetan monks sitting at the tables, that&#8217;s a good sign. They reside mainly in the region of Kangra, Mandi, Bilaspur and Chamba. It would seem that these people were driven out of the Indian plains during the <a href=\"https:\/\/magikindia.com\/culture-india\/history-of-india\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Mughal invasions<\/strong><\/a> and took refuge in the mountainous parts. Originally, the Gaddis were nomad shepherds; They have now added strings to their bow: agriculture, weaving and making iron utensils.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Gaddi women are recognizable to their very colorful traditional clothing, often red and green. During the trek to Triund, your road cross the 20m high Bhagsunag waterfalls (to visit preferably after the monsoon in July-August).
