Traditionally, this art depicts the mythological legends of India and especially those of <a href=\"https:\/\/magikindia.com\/krishna-jayanti\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Lord Krishna<\/a>. The Sanjhi, which has gradually fallen into disuse, has nevertheless evolved into contemporary forms of great creativity that are exhibited in the best art galleries in India.<\/strong><br \/>\n<!--more--><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>The origins of Sanjhi<\/h3>\n<hr \/>\n<p>&#8216;Sanjhi&#8217; derived from the word &#8216;sajja&#8217; meaning &#8216;decoration&#8217; or &#8216;sanjh&#8217;, \u2018dusk&#8217;, referring to the time of day during which the Sanjhi drawings were revealed to the public.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_45633\" style=\"width: 719px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/magikindia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/RadhaKrishna.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-45633\" class=\"wp-image-45633 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/magikindia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/RadhaKrishna.jpg\" alt=\"sanjhi\" width=\"709\" height=\"472\" srcset=\"https:\/\/magikindia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/RadhaKrishna.jpg 709w, https:\/\/magikindia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/RadhaKrishna-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 709px) 100vw, 709px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-45633\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Krishna and Radha<\/p><\/div>\n<p>It is said that the Sanjhi art appeared 400 years ago in <a href=\"https:\/\/magikindia.com\/mathura-uttar-pradesh\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Mathura<\/strong><\/a>, the birthplace of <a href=\"https:\/\/magikindia.com\/krishna-jayanti\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Lord Krishna<\/strong>.<\/a> This art was used as an element of decoration in the temples of Mathura and <a href=\"https:\/\/magikindia.com\/vrindavan-uttar-pradesh\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Vrindavan<\/strong><\/a> dedicated to <a href=\"https:\/\/magikindia.com\/radhakrishna-divine-love\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>RadhaKrishna<\/strong><\/a> during special festivities like <a href=\"https:\/\/magikindia.com\/holi-india\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Holi<\/strong><\/a> (the festival of colors) and <a href=\"https:\/\/magikindia.com\/krishna-jayanti\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Janmashtami<\/strong> <\/a>(birth of Krishna).<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_45651\" style=\"width: 719px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/magikindia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/sanjhi-radha-krishna.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-45651\" class=\"wp-image-45651 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/magikindia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/sanjhi-radha-krishna.jpg\" alt=\"Sanjhi\" width=\"709\" height=\"473\" srcset=\"https:\/\/magikindia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/sanjhi-radha-krishna.jpg 709w, https:\/\/magikindia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/sanjhi-radha-krishna-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 709px) 100vw, 709px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-45651\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Sanjhi on a wooden base in the Radha\u00a0Wallabh Ji temple<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The creation of the religious Sanjhi is not merely a recreational drawing but is part of the &#8216;<strong>Radha Krishna Bhakti&#8217;,<\/strong> ie the expression of love and devotion for Lord Krishna and Radha, and for the divine in general. The process of the making of the drawing is a form of meditation in itself offering a real moment of introspection; The Sanjhi looks very much like Buddhist mandalas.<\/p>\n<p>For many centuries, this particular art has persisted within the community of Vaishnava priests in Mathura and Vrindavan, and it has slowly been forgotten. The process requires a lot of skill and patience. Courtesy : DNA<\/p><\/div>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Jal Sanjhi, Sanjhi on water<\/h3>\n<hr \/>\n<p>As we have seen above, the art of religious Sanjhi is becoming more and more rare in India, but fortunately it is still perpetuated in a few places like the Radha Wallabh Ji temple located in <a href=\"https:\/\/magikindia.com\/udaipur-rajasthan\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Udaipur,<\/strong> <\/a>Rajasthan. Madhav Lal Pancholi around 60 years ago. He created the paper stencils still used today in the temple. His sons Rajesh Pancholi and Narayan Pancholi then took over followed by his grandsons Gunjan Pancholi and Parag Pancholi.<\/p>\n<p>The Sanjhi drawings of this temple are performed 5 days annually during the 16-day period of <strong>Pitru Paksha<\/strong>\u00a0(September-October) during which Hindus pay tribute to their ancestors, mainly in the form of food (<strong>shradh<\/strong>).
