Thanks to very specific construction technologies, the haveli, translated as &#8220;mansion&#8221; in English, is an ingenious architectural response to the extreme climatic conditions of the regions of <a href=\"https:\/\/magikindia.com\/10-must-see-places-rajasthan\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Rajasthan<\/a>, providing passive means of heating and cooling, while respecting the environment. Thus, this type of residence, which sometimes takes on a palatial appearance, was, long before the term was used, a bioclimatic building and a model of sustainability that still inspires nowadays architects.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<p>Haveli derives from the Persian word &#8220;hawli&#8221; meaning &#8220;partition&#8221; or &#8220;enclosed space&#8221;. This type of building is found throughout India, but particularly in northwestern India (<a href=\"https:\/\/magikindia.com\/10-must-see-places-rajasthan\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Rajasthan<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/magikindia.com\/punjab\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Punjab<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/magikindia.com\/must-see-places-gujarat\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Gujarat<\/a>), where large climatic variations pose challenges in terms of living comfort.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If we take the city of Churu, for example, in the northeast of Rajasthan, we observe temperatures that oscillate between 3 degrees in winter and 50 degrees in summer; this is a considerable difference.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It is for this reason that Rajasthan is surely the state that offers the most perfect model of what the concept of haveli ; the best exemples are the golden city of <a href=\"https:\/\/magikindia.com\/jaisalmer-rajasthan\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Jaisalmer <\/a>and the region of <a href=\"https:\/\/magikindia.com\/shekhawati-rajasthan\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Shekhawati <\/a>and, to a lesser measure, <a href=\"https:\/\/magikindia.com\/bikaner-rajasthan\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Bikaner<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/magikindia.com\/udaipur-rajasthan\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Udaipur<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" src=\"https:\/\/magikindia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/podar-haveli-shekhawati-nawalgarh-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"havelis \" class=\"wp-image-97960\" srcset=\"https:\/\/magikindia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/podar-haveli-shekhawati-nawalgarh-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/magikindia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/podar-haveli-shekhawati-nawalgarh-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/magikindia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/podar-haveli-shekhawati-nawalgarh-1200x800.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/magikindia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/podar-haveli-shekhawati-nawalgarh-720x480.jpg 720w, https:\/\/magikindia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/podar-haveli-shekhawati-nawalgarh.jpg 1219w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption>The Podar haveli in Nawalgarh, <a href=\"https:\/\/magikindia.com\/shekhawati-rajasthan\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Shekhawati, <\/a>no less than 750 frescoes adorn the mansion, reflecting the opulence of 17th century Marwari merchants<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>If the architecture of the haveli was a direct response to the regional climate, it was also a reflection of the opulence of its designers, wealthy merchants, who made their fortune thanks to the Silk Road.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the <a href=\"https:\/\/magikindia.com\/shekhawati-rajasthan\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Shekhawati region<\/a>, northeast of Rajasthan, it was the Banias Marwaris who, in the 17th century, built sumptuous residences adorned with a profusion of colorful frescoes. \ud83d\ude09 Nawalgarh, Shekhawati<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-css-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Havelis have some typical features that include courtyards, verandas, balconies, thick walls, and materials like brick, natural stone, and lime that come into play in thermal regulation.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-css-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The chowk, <\/strong>one of the major thermal regulators of the haveli<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-css-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p>Havelis are built around one or more interior courtyards called <strong>&#8220;chowk&#8221;<\/strong>. True heart of the building, the chowk ensures the transition between public and private spaces and largely contributes to the thermal regulation of the whole building.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The &#8220;chowk&#8221; is not the exclusive apanache of the haveli; the house with courtyard, is an architectural device that was already used in the Indian subcontinent from 2500 BC.
