{"id":98984,"date":"2022-07-16T10:16:00","date_gmt":"2022-07-16T08:16:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/magikindia.com\/?p=98984"},"modified":"2022-07-17T06:51:58","modified_gmt":"2022-07-17T04:51:58","slug":"le-torana-marana-dans-le-marriage-hindou","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/magikindia.com\/en\/le-torana-marana-dans-le-marriage-hindou\/","title":{"rendered":"The Toran Marana of Rajasthan"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>While strolling through the cities of <a href=\"https:\/\/magikindia.com\/10-must-see-places-rajasthan\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Rajasthan<\/a>, perhaps you have already noticed this pentagonal wooden decoration placed above the front door of a house. <strong>This element<\/strong><\/strong> <strong>called &#8220;Toran&#8221; or &#8220;Torana&#8221; is an integral part of Hindu wedding ceremonies in Rajasthan and, under its simple appearance, it has a strong symbolism.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-css-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The legend of<\/strong> Toran<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-css-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p>The Toran is associated with a popular legend.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>It is said that in ancient times there was a demon named Toran, who took the form of a parrot<\/strong> and waited patiently at the entrance to the house of the future bride. When the groom attempted to enter his bride&#8217;s house to finalize the wedding ceremony, the demon bird would jump on him and take possession of his body and then marry the bride.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>History repeated itself for a long time until a wise prince unmasked the bird and struck it down.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It is said that since those times, the bride&#8217;s family hangs a Toran decorated with parrots above their front door before the wedding ceremony.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/magikindia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/toran-groom.jpg\" alt=\"toran \" class=\"wp-image-99994\" width=\"931\" height=\"691\" srcset=\"https:\/\/magikindia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/toran-groom.jpg 931w, https:\/\/magikindia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/toran-groom-300x223.jpg 300w, https:\/\/magikindia.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/toran-groom-720x534.jpg 720w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 931px) 100vw, 931px\" \/><figcaption>The future groom touching the Toran with a branch and his sword at the entrance to the reception hall | Photo : <a href=\"https:\/\/in.pinterest.com\/nishashekhawat81329\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Nisha Shekhawat<\/a><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>During the last stage of the wedding (see my article on the <a href=\"https:\/\/magikindia.com\/les-rituels-du-mariage-au-rajasthan\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Rajasthan wedding<\/a>), the future groom, preceded by a procession, leaves for the wedding venue on horseback (baraat) or on the back of an elephant for the wealthiest families.<strong> Before entering this place*, the groom touches the Toran seven times using a branch of neem and\/or a sword.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This action is supposed to recreate the death (marana) of the parrot-demon and allows the marriage to start under good auspices.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>*The place of the wedding is traditionally the house of the bride. These days, weddings are most often held outdoors to accommodate a larger number of people. It happened very frequently that the fianc\u00e9e was kidnapped by another suitor and that she was forced to marry, forever sullying the reputation of the young woman as well as that of her family. The Toran was therefore formerly used to ward off bad luck by symbolically killing the &#8220;parrot-impostor-kidnapper&#8221;. Although fortunately times have changed, the tradition continues today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-css-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The symbolism <strong>of the Parrot<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-css-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Sensuality and fidelity<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-css-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p>It is not by chance that the parrot, or more precisely the parakeet, (suka in Hindi) is used in the Toran. The bird challenged by its master comes out of its cage and chooses a card which will then be interpreted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Ramayana epic also tells that when Sita and Rama went into exile, they disguised themselves so as not to be recognized. In Hinduism, the Ga\u1e47as are the soldiers of the god Shiva and their leader is none other than the god Ganesha.
